I've tried every trick I know to make adult groundhogs edible, all to no avail. With that said, young groundhogs eat even better than rabbits, although they're harder to clean

They are tasty . Roasted with veggies . Better than coon .

I've eaten a lot of different critters and eliminated both possum and crow after only one try. I had pontificated about crows being grain eaters, then saw one eating on a road kill dog the same week I had eaten one. Heck, a lot is about getting over the source of the meat and concentrating on how to prepare it. With that said, young groundhog is in a culinary class by itself. Go for head shots to preserve the carcass and enjoy. Several years ago, my wife was out of town and I was taking my daughters out for lunch, when I saw a young groundhog get nipped on the head by the car in front of me. A friend had requested a groundhog tail and strip of back fur for fly tying nymphs and I envisioned a tasty treat and stopped to check it out. The young chuck was dead, but in great shape, so I placed it in a bag and brought it back to the van. My eldest daughter then lamented, "Oh why can't we be like normal people"!

When my youngest daughter was 4, a big doe rabbit got hit in front of the house which I promptly cleaned. A few days later I shot a huge rat, Rattus norvegicus, which was haunting the dog kennels. When I picked the rat up by the tail to display its size, my daughter inquired, "Are we going to eat him,daddy?" No! We didn't, and I never even contemplated doing so. Although, he was a big, healthy, dog food fed rat.

I lost count of the free tickets I've gotten, for supplying racoons n' muskrats alone, let alone wild turkeys, for different "wild game dinners" in MI.
