O/U or SxS question
O/U or SxS question
Those of you who use a double barrel with a tight choke/open choke configuration, what choke are you using for your open choke barrel? I am looking to start testing and open barrel and TSS in my 16 gauge. I always used 2 turkey chokes with lead but want try one of each with TSS.
Re: O/U or SxS question
I’m using a factory flush improved cylinder in one and modified in other. Both are Yildiz 20 gauge O/U’s. One just seems to shoot a little better with the improved cylinder. I use it for 30 yards and in.

Thanks buddy. I was thinking either improved cylinder or light mod, would be a decent starting point but wasn't sure. I never really played with TSS in standard chokes
Re: O/U or SxS question
I use full/modified in my 28ga o/u. Seems to do the trick.

I’m shooting a trulock modified in my open barrel. I think I’d prefer light mod.

Thanks guys
Re: O/U or SxS question
I went with a modified in the open barrel after trying a light modified. At 10 - 15 yards not much real difference I saw in patterns. 15 -30 is where it really opened up. But I am shooting a 3" lead in 5 or 6 shot. TSS only for the distance choke.

I'm shooting a .596 trulock, full, from shoe-top to 25 yards in open barrel, considering trying a modified to compare

Re: O/U or SxS question
In my 12 OU I have two different constrictions 660 and 673 but went a little different route with my 20. Both barrels have a 580 but I shoot 8x10 TSS in my long barrel and whatever copper plated 6s I got laying around in the other. No sense shooting a $7 shell at a bird 18 yards away and risk a miss with a pattern the size of a bottle cap.

Might go that route, I will see how the TSS patterns in an open choke first. That is actually what I am doing as of now full on bottom with TSS improved modified on top with 1-1/4oz of lead 6s

Re: O/U or SxS question
Light mod in top barrel (12 ga) gets me to 40 yds with good wiggle room with 1.25 oz of reclaimed TSS 9x8.5s. Started experimenting with the open barrel concept loading 1.25 oz lead 7s through cyl choke. That combo was good to 20 yds. IC got me to 25 yds. But I wanted to be able to shoot to 40 yds with the open barrel (100/10"). No choke I had would do that with the 1.25 oz load of lead 7s, so I switched to a light load of TSS. Now I have one barrel that is good to 40 and the other from 40 to infinity and beyond. Killed both my turkeys so far this year with the open barrel, one at 37 yds and the other at 20.

Perfect, this is essentially what I am trying to accomplish, maybe 30 rather than 40 though. That said the bore and shot column of the 16 should accomplish just that. Thank you for your reply!

Re: O/U or SxS question
You can get to 30 easily with lead, probably mod to imp mod, but might need full. If you are going to use TSS in the open barrel think cyl to imp cyl.jsh909 wrote: ↑April 24th, 2021, 7:50 amSpuriosity wrote: ↑April 24th, 2021, 7:40 am Light mod in top barrel (12 ga) gets me to 40 yds with good wiggle room with 1.25 oz of reclaimed TSS 9x8.5s.
