My wife’s 1st gobbler
My wife CherryBombed her 1st gobbler this Friday She had killed a jake previously a couple years ago. Turkey hunting is rough on her due to COPD and she can’t walk at a fast pace. When air quality isn’t good then it’s even tougher on her. Wasn’t a good day as the pollen and air quality wasn’t the best for her but she took work off for the day.
She woke up with a headache and breathing bad. So I told her we will take a drive and scout and see if anything was out strutting. Drove out to our farm and 2 gobblers strutting with 4 hens on the neighbors. So we hit the woods and set for 2 hours. Not a peep. My wife’s not complaining but she told me a couple times she wasn’t feeling well. So I asked her if she was ready for coffee and breakfast. Told her we needed to come back and see if those strutters were in the same spot or moved on.
So we head to our favorite coffee spot and get caffeinated and breakfast. I then asked her if she was ready to head back and see if we can find them gobblers, she was ready again. We head back to the farm and no turkeys in the fields. We pull up to the garage on the farm and I tell her I should hit the Harrison’s Custom Calls crow call and I hit it. She points and said he’s to the far back. Now this 10acre woods here in northern Indiana is an oddity. Has 3 ridges and 2 drains. Small hills but reminds you more of southern Indiana than northern part. What she heard was the gobbler on the 2nd hill down in the drain and we walked in thinking much further. I held the strutter decoy up and I yelped and they didn’t spook or run off. They looked and slowly fed away. 2 gobblers and looked like 4-6 hens. We let them all go over the hill and down the other drain. We set up on 2nd hill hoping to make a hen mad or excited and have them bring the gobblers in for a shot. I heard them hens a couple times but no go. After a hour I decided we needed to move another 150 yards to a better vantage point. Got situated and I started cold calling. Had some excitement as a young raccoon decided to try and come e. Heck is out. Freaked my wife out lol. I’ll have to get the video downloaded and share that After that she got tired and tried to take a nap. After a failed attempt I asked her if she needed to go home and take it easy for a bit. She thought that would be a good idea. So I grabbed the decoy. While we are talking I had popped in a Halloran mouthcall that I hadn’t used yet. We walked approximately a 100 yards maybe and went down the drain and back up halfway the other side. When I just started cutting and yelping. Bad I finished the sequence I heard the last bit of a gobble and looked at my wife and she pointed towards our neighbors pond. We were on the tractor path and I point for her to sit on the side next to a big oak. I plant the gobbler decoy in the road and sat down on the other side of the path. Hit my mouth call again and they both gobbled. Less than a minute she points her finger while holding the Mossberg SA28 and I see them big red heads looking at us about a hundred yards. They came straight in and I figured they would want to beat that decoy up and here it is in the middle of the path directly between us. So when they hit that 20-25 yard mark I cut and yelped and they gobbled their fool heads off
When that strutter lifted his head up that last time I watched my wife smoke him. A dream come true for her and myself.
God blessed her with a last minute, sunny afternoon Longbeard. I’m glad and happy for her as the weather since then has been crap.
