Mallards & ????
On the way home from lunch today, there were 5 ducks on the water where I usually see them.
I know there were 1 drake & 3 hen mallards but I’m not sure about the 5th bird. Is it also a
color-phased mallard or what? I have never seen a duck with plumage like this. It is the bottom
right pic.

Re: Mallards & ????
My Ohio GW buddy says it looks like a domestic duck bred with an American black duck.

Re: Mallards & ????
On another site, 1 guy said shoveler & another said x between a mallard & shoveler. The bill doesn't look
wide enough at the end for a shoveler but I don't know much about ducks & don't really have a good shot
of the head.
Thx for the feedback, Ronnie.

Or what we call around here as French fry ducks
The ones you shoot on the lake after the soccer moms take their kids to the park and feed them fries.
We literally have shot ducks with fries in their bills.

Re: Mallards & ????
Yep we call them cracker ducks .... Druid and wild mallard cross or just a straight Druid .. We killed them just a couple miles from Macon Ga 's Lake Tobosofkee . Actually had 23 or 24 in a 8 man limit one morning many years ago , and had 8 banded geese that morning all banded in Laurens Co Ga at the Moose lodge lake .. Wish I had that pic , lost it on an old phone ...

Blonde Mallard mix? Lack of color on the wings is weird, makes me think it has some farm/domestic in it. Either way it's cool. Almost like a Mallard/Specklebelly crosssoiltester wrote: ↑December 16th, 2021, 6:57 pmK guess this one then, U expertssoiltester wrote: ↑December 14th, 2021, 7:24 pm Mixed up "morferdite"

Do me a favor and jump some birds down my way. I live in Ohio. It's been a dead zone. We had one good push a couple weeks ago for about 2 days and that was about the extent of it.

I do hear there is open water on Great Lakes and corn fields are full of mallards, with the last "2 day" season set to open this weekend

Don't believe everything you hear lol. Probably true but so much land up by the lake is leased nowadays it's a crap shoot to get in up there.soiltester wrote: ↑December 30th, 2021, 11:23 amPretty hard to do now and has been since 05

I saw an episode on MOD where the "farm kids", well they're all grown now were guides, in Huron County now and when you know all the current farmers and land owners, pretty had to get that land leased when they hunt if for free, I'm thinking!!jsh909 wrote: ↑December 31st, 2021, 1:04 pmDon't believe everything you hear lol. Re: Mallards & ????
Makes sense, I assumed leased but probably just permission. We used to be able to knock on doors and everyone would say "Absolutely! Go kill them all, there are way to many up here" now it's , "No we got hunters/guides/leases already using our property." Or people just don't want to deal with the hassle of slob hunters, which I get, so the just tell everyone "no". Up until a few years ago I can honestly say in basically 25 years of waterfowl hunting, we had only been denied permission to hunt geese a handful of times. Now it's probably less than 50 percent, and if I am being honest with my self about 30 percent, of doors being knocked on give us permission. Ducks have always been a bit of a crap shoot because they are "pretty" birds and people like to see them. Used to be geese make a mess, get them out of here.soiltester wrote: ↑January 1st, 2022, 7:59 amI saw an episode on MOD where the "farm kids", well they're all grown now were guides, in Huron County now and when you know all the current farmers and land owners, pretty had to get that land leased when they hunt if for free, I'm thinking!!jsh909 wrote: ↑December 31st, 2021, 1:04 pmDon't believe everything you hear lol.
