Post by Shooter »

I was just reading about how gas is fixin to go up again, and made me remember back in time, what it used to be when I was younger.

What is the cheapest YOU can remember???

I'll tell you mine later,... most of you young fellers will think I am nuts!!!

I know mine will be blown away but the cheapest I ever remember it was .87 a gallon. There are 3 grades and they were all separated by .10. Back in those days I remember thinking there's no way I'm paying $1.07 for a gallon of gas!! I'd give my left nut to see those prices again!! Back then I could fill up, get a can of Copenhagen, and a Mountain Dew and still put change back in my pocket from a $20 bill!! And minimum wage was $4.25 an hour!

Let me rephrase this, I'm sure I was lower in my lifetime as a mater of fact I can remember the gas strike back in 84 or 85. The price I mentioned above of .87 was since I started driving.

.99 - and that was before I was driving. Lowest I ever actually paid was $1.20ish I think.

I remember when all grades passed the $1 mark. The lowest was probably 90 cents or so..

When I started driving I started out in a little Ford Ranger then worked, saved, and bought myself a F150 straight 6 stick shift. It had 2- 20 galloon gas tanks. I could take a 50 dollar bill, fill the truck up and then take my girlfriend to the movies, buy popcorn and drinks and still have a few bucks in change. That wasn't that long ago either.

Turning 16 in 1970 I remember 4 gallons for a dollar, 24.9 per gallon, driving a big ole' 383 plymouth roadrunner with a huge gas tank it took $7.00 to fill the tank up...however it didn't take long before shortages started...remember the odd and even last digit of your license plate to buy gas, seems to me that that was maybe 74-75 ???

I remember just after 9/11 it went down around here to .89 but when I was a kid in the high 90s was common place.

Yep, 1970 for me too is the earliest I can remember. I think it was 33 cents. Didn't start driving until 78.

I worked at a gas station when I was in high school. I pumped gas for .22 a gallon. Also included an oil check, windows washed, and the air in the tires checked!! You also got a handful of "Green Stamps". 1969 or so.
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

.29, I had a 71 chevy that was built to pass everything but a gas station. It would not run on anything but high test, and when it hit .68 a gallon, I said "I can't afford to drive this thing anymore" and sold it.
