R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
AKA, The turkey field hangout,...LOL.
Lily wanted all you guys and gals to see her with the giant Corsair with an actual 5 cylinder radial engine,... engine alone---$ 3000,...lol. Yea, some of us are NUTS!!
This plane has an 110" wingspan, and weighs 50lbs. It belonged to a fella out of state.
That is my P-51 half way down the line with the red tail feathers.
Had a member video it and in flight, so in a few days maybe I can get it uploaded soon.
Did not have as big a turnout as usual. Only 48 entries. Probably the 90+ temps.
Several engines overheated with the temps so high. Mine even got too hot after about 5 minutes, so I had a short flight, before it became a problem.
Recognize this place Wes and Derrick???...lol.
Enjoy a few pics, Tommy

Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
Wow....those planes are beautiful! I always wanted to build a Spad 13 about the size of that Corsair, but haven't ever got around to it.
Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
Very cool!!!
Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
The very mention of Tullahoma brings back memories of Grandad and Grandmas house on New Ovoca Rd. Been at least 45 years ago since I was last there.looks like fun. nice pics. Cool planes.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

LOL Red, Ovoca Rd is still there, but I'd bet money there are just a few more houses than there were 45 years ago.
It's where all the doctors and rich people live. There are probably 6 to 8 real fancy sub-divisions there, with the Tullahoma Country Club right in the middle.

Cool beans, Shooter. Yeah, I recognize it. Anybody strafe any turkeys during the fly-in?
Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN

Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN

No, as far as I know, you don't need any license to fly on private property.GLS wrote:Tommy, is a Technician ham radio license required to fly those planes? gil
We all have to have an AMA license to fly on our field belonging to the Air Force for insurance reasons. Even the guys with the Ham licenses, have to have an AMA.

Chase???,...LOL!!! You can't hardly get them off the runway sometimes. I have even dive bombed them with a stunt plane within just a few feet, and they just stand there and watch til you get past and go back to pickin around.el diablo wrote:Cool stuff Tommy. LOL, I just remembered something that happened a few years ago with that same stunt plane.
The deer that hang out there are pretty tame and used to us flying around also.
I was diving at a doe one time, but she would not budge. After about 6 tries, I got closer and closer.
The last time I swooped in, she must have jumped 10 ft in the air and hauled azz.
Everyone was looking at each other wondering what happened, even me. Finally brought the plane back around in front of us close, and something didn't look right. LOL, the one piece half moon landing gear was hanging on just by the plastic film covering just floppin in the wind. I guess I got closer than I thought,...lol. Needless to say it was an ugly belly landing after the wheels and gear finally fell completely off. Wish I had gotten that on vid, cause I never seen a deer run so fast, setting the dry grass on fire behind her,...lol.
Yep, I have a bad habit of messing with the wildlife with my toys.
I once got after a buzzard that had moved into the field. After a few minutes chasing him around, I finally cut a bunch of feathers with the prop. You would not believe how fast a buzzard really can fly,...LOL!!!

That's pretty cool. You need to puts some guns (.50 cal) on them!! Love those Corsairs.Shooter wrote:Chase???,...LOL!!! You can't hardly get them off the runway sometimes. Here are a few pics of my Pretty bird in flight that was sent in my e-mail.
Now you can see what people mean when they say that it looks real in the air.
Still waiting on the vid.

Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
Great shots, Tommy. That does indeed look real. Now you just need eight LED lights in the leading edge of the wings to rapidly wink on and off to look just like machine guns.
Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
That's cool as heck Tommy.
Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
Tommy that is really cool, you and other have more balls than me to put $$$$$ in the air and hope not to crash it.

Oh Yea, there were a few flubs, and grown men crying afterwards. There always are with warbirds.pullit wrote:Tommy that is really cool, you and other have more balls than me to put $$$$$ in the air and hope not to crash it.
They are very touchy, and are not forgiving at all. Not like fun fly airplanes.
We even advised the guy that crashed his giant P-47, to let a more Warbird friendly guy to fly it, because this guy doesn't know the meaning of flying smmoooth,...LOL. Yep, he should have listened.
He learned the hard way, how quick a Warbird can get out of control, and how quick a couple thousand dollars can go down the drain.
The other pic of the Mustang landing, was, well,... he just came in too slow, and it tried to roll over just before touchdown, because of loss of lift on one wing.

Those are big enough that the FAA has to be called in to check things out! It is alway pilot error....

Re: R/C Warbirds over Arnold AFB, Tullahoma, TN
It was in this guys case. He is a know it all, and a bigmouth, so when he first crashed, everyone was kind of Gigglin. He even took it pretty well for awhile, but after an hour or so, it started hitting him. Almost felt sorry for him. Almost,...lol.
I finally realized it is not so much the money invested, but the amount of time that goes into building one.
Especially the bigger ones, and putting all the detail into them. Some people put years into one, not me, but some,...lol. So yea, it hurts pretty bad when you put one in the dirt. They seem a little tough in the air, but they are like eggs when they lawn dart into the ground at any speed.
