1st Gobbler of the Season - PA

Post by Grunt-N-Gobble »

Well, on the 3rd Saturday of the season, I was able to connect on this nice gobbler @ 6:37am. A storm system was moving through the area and the last heavy rain shower hit around 6:10-6:15. I was sitting on the ground in a spot I'd cleared out the previous weekend where I've seen gobblers/hens in the past and where my Dad killed one a couple years before.

I wasn't quite soaked, but had water running down my right side when I see on my phone that there was a text message. It's from my Dad asking me if I was getting wet.........being the funny guy that he is. Meanwhile, he's sitting a few hundred yds away in my DB ground blind staying dry. After texting him back, I slowly set the phone back down and slowly turned to my left to look at the decoys, and there he is, walking around my 1/4 strut decoy unaware of me 40yds away. He never gobbled or made a sound and had come in from behind over my left shoulder. In fact, I hadn't made a single call either as I wanted to see what would come through all on their own.

I waited a bit for him to clear the decoy and got the gun into position. When he was moving ever so slowly to the right of the deke, I shot him @ 39-40yds. I was using my 12ga 11-87 with a Sumtoy choke and a hand loaded 3", 2oz 7x7 blend.

Weight was 16-17lbs, 9 5/8" beard and 1 1/8" spurs. Not a heavy bird, but I'll take him. Still have 1 more PA tag left.

Thanks Tommy. Never turkey hunted another state.........someday I'll do it, when the kids are a little older.

This particular spot is loaded with turkeys, but the gobblers can be pretty call shy at times. I enjoy calling them in as much as the next guy, but sometimes I just have to ambush them and hunt where I know they'll pass through. But it sure is a blast when I get one that WANTS to play ball and come to the call.

Alright Grunt, Doug and I talked it over last nite.
We are gonna give you a choice of prizes to choose for hitting #100.
A small trophy, a plaque, or a pound of TSS.
So what say you, Mr 100??

Are you fellas serious??? :o  I certainly don't expect anything and the only reason I'm #100 is because I was asked to add my bird to the kill thread.

If so, you can probably guess which "prize" I'd choose................... a pound of TSS. The trophy or plaque would probably just collect dust, but the TSS would be put to great use into killing another turkey (next year most likely). I've been wanting to buy the stuff, but just haven't done it yet as I've got a decent stash of HW 7's and Hevishot 7's. It would force me to get more from Hal if I had a "starter" pound.
