When I see the eye rolls when I mention that I use #9 18 g/cc tungsten shot, a few get the point when they learn that there are 585 lead #9s in an oz.

Ballistics Products is supposed to start carrying them at some point.... right now #6s are the smallest they have...

RSI has it as well, but same size issue.

I guess I will have to order some 6's until they have 7's available.

I would like the 7's for my muzzleloader...

Hey Hal, the top of the chart says approx, nominal pellet counts, so if I want to check my scale how close is this going to be for the #9 TSS if I weigh out an oz. and count em? I have and old school RCBS traditional type scale and a cheap digital I would like to check for accuracy. I'm looking for a good reasonably priced digital scale, anyone have a preference?

I wouldn't try to check your scale that way. The counts depend on perfect pellet size and density, which may vary some.

I have found the cheap 1500 digital scale to maintain very good accuracy.

Thanks for the link Hal, I'll pick 1 up. I guess what I was looking for is to verify my scale that I have just to figure out something .I will weigh a few rifle bullets tomorrow.
Thanks

Killdee, my little digital scale comes with a calibration weight that is supposed to be spot on. The RCBS balance scale also comes with a weight that is also accurately marked as well. Trust but verify is a good policy.

Checking these bullets, Barnes 130gr and Nosler 85gr, only 1 of the 85s measured 86 and 4 out of 5 Barnes 130 weighed 131.My point in doing this is, weighing out an oz. of #9 TSS on the digital and verifying with the rcbs scale, I get 424 in an oz. Being new to shot shell reloading, I want to check every aspect and verify. Why am I getting 52 more shot in an oz? I am going to order that scale you posted since my digital is not designed for reloading and digital is much easier than using a balance scale, but I'd like to get your opinions. Has anyone else counted an oz.?
Thanks for the help

There can be a variance from lot to lot with TSS depending upon when you bought it. In addition, to get a true statistical average you will need to weigh and count more than an ounce. There are slight variances in shot to shot in the same batch. I believe the most recent shipment I received, according to Hal, is actually smaller than 9 which can account for more shot per ounce. I have an old RCBS balance scale. It came with a brass weight for adding to the beam for heavier loads. It is an accurate weight. Have you tried weighing it on your digital scale to see what it weighs and if it is close to what RCBS says it is??

Yessir, I weigh them back to back, RCBS to the digital and they are within 1 pellets difference. I bought this shot back late May or June so perhaps a smaller shot size is the reason??? In a post last summer when William posted some high numbers from testing my 870 20 some mentioned I must have overloaded the shells to get those numbers so I'm trying to make positive sure I wasn't is why I decided to weigh and count and I'm getting higher numbers than what Hal posted in this thread.
Thanks

I just weighed checked what was left of the last batch of nines, and I got 392 an ounce. They do vary some in size from batch to batch. I have had as large as 340 per ounce. But the 360 or so is standard #9s at exactly 18g/cc. A pellet as small as #9s will vary a lot in count with a very small size difference.

Assuming a 424 count and say, 17.75 g/cc, you end up with 1.88" gel penetration at 40 yds (1100 fps), compared to a true size #9 which would give you 2.07" (at 70 deg, 1000'). 340 count would give you 2.16" gel penetration...

I have been thinking of trying to get a smaller pellet (I was thinking about a 450 count) -- something that wil give about 1.25" penetration at 60-65 yds, while increasing the pellet count for smaller payloads for ducks especially...

Thanks Hal and GLS, this eases my mind and know it wasnt a human or equipment error in my loads. I have no lack of confidence in the killing power of this stuff even if its slightly smaller shot.

How fast would one need to go in order to get that 1.25 @60? Those 450 would be 10s?

A 450 count would have to be at 1200 to give you 1.25" at 60 yds (sea level and 32 degrees). They would be true 9-1/2s in size. At the speed of the 1 oz load I was thinking of (1383 fps), you'd get 1.25" at 66 yds with the 450 count.

It would be really nice to have some 9 1/2's or 10's for loading .410 shells.
