What do y'all think bout changing the recoil spring to a heavier one, would it make it easier on a inertia gun? I really wanna try this load but don't wanna break my gun....LOL.

Shot the 20moa today. It's less recoil than a 3" longbeard for sure. Considerably more than the trusty stubby 20 co. Shot it in a little bitty 500 turkey thug that weighs very little.

Now the zip load of Hals....that runs 1260ish fps and 1 5/8 oz. It kicked. Nothing scientific like reloader has said, but I don't see 84 ft pounds of recoil. Neither is anywhere near a 3.5 longbeard out of a 500 Mossberg 12.

Once I take pics I'll post patterns on new thread

good to hear, I have 3 MOA's loaded... 9's,8's and then a 7x9 just for fun. I'll shoot this weekend and report back about cycling/ recoil in my stoeger m3020. loads are right at 2.78-2.80" loaded.

If it didn't kick as hard as a mere 3" LB, then sadly the speed isn't there in that particular set-up. I'd run it over a chrono before hunting just to be sure. Perceived recoil can be different, but physics doesn't lie.

I'll shoot it over my chrono today or tomorrow. Built a new trap out of boredom so it was virgin, but the 8.5s plowed through 1/4" plywood and a layer of linoleum before denting my exterior foam filled steel door. Recovered 1.8 ounces of shot. Pretty sure it's running over 1000 fps. I won't try to dismiss physics, maybe the laws of physics cease to exist in my loading room. Grits cook faster at my house to, but either way this load in a small 500 was not bad compared to many 12 gauge loads I've shot. The lilzip kicked worse in my opinion. Maybe Hal has some insight that he'd share...any insight I have that I havent shared, I feel I should not disclose until speaking with him. Ill keep yall updated.

Bowhunter, have you loaded those 20moa in the 3020 and cycled it without shooting? I'm very interested to know if the 2.80 cycle in that gun! I'd venture to say mine were longer but I didn't measure. It's possible I didn't crimp down far enough and that's why it didn't seem to recoil that bad.

I hate shooting the 1 5/8 ounce load out of the my light 20's! There's no way I'd pull the trigger on that one!

Awesome pattern though!

If you hate the 1 5/8, stay way away from this one! I am recoil sensitive to the point that I deer hunt with a 7mm-08, but I feel like I could shoot the 1 5/8 all day. Maybe it's all perceived.

My main problem is youth size stocks kill me.

In a full size gun they wouldn't be too bad.

I think this is very legitimate. I cut off the stock on a Beretta A303. Prior to cutting it down, it felt like the lightest kicking shotgun I'd every fired. Now, it like to nose up hard and hit my cheek when shooting. I think it will work better for the kids though.

I just tried it... and after many failed attempts on how to use a semi.... 😅.... I figured it out, and ... drumroll please..... the MOA cycles! By about .001” lol

I shot again twice today. It let me know it meant business, I might venture to say about like a pump heavy 3" 12 gauge turkey load. Definitely not like a 3.5 turkey load. One reading over the chrono was 4100 fps...must have been a little close. The other was 1175 fps. I'll post pattern pics on the other 20moa thread

Hal’s 2 1/8oz 20ga load

I shot it just now, it has some umph to it and it’s close to a 3.5”. I’d guess the same as a 3” 12 gauge load. Anyways, unfortunately they won’t cycle in the stoeger M3020 without a slight push from the bottom. I haven’t counted yet but will post the counts with a stoeger factory .565 choke

The last 3.5 I shot was a longbeard out of a stoeger 3500 auto, I have never felt recoil like that, I have 9 more of them bad boys that I wouldn't give to my worst enemy. I might steal the copper pellets out of them one day. That 20moa in my baby Mossberg wasn't close. But I agree after shooting them a few times it is about like a 3" standard 12 gauge turkey load in a heavier gun than what I'm shooting now.

Can't wait to see the patterns!

Ok so, with a dirty barrel, and a factory .565 stoeger choke with my M3020, I got :
9’s - 312
8’s - 267
7x9’s - 265

The patterns were very nice, I’d definitely like to try a couple different chokes, the straight 9’s were beautiful 50/50 like pattern through the 20”. The 8’s and 7x9’s were pretty even as well

Pretty sweet. Have you shot the 1 5/8 yet from the 3020? I would say the moa20 took me from a 330ish up to a 370ish with 9s. However I'm assuming my 10-20 has increased a lot more. I haven't got around to counting but I will. If I could get a 370/300 pattern that would be sweet, even if it is extreme overkill

8 or 10 years ago who would have ever thought you could have extreme overkill with a 20 ga.

Yes actually the factory choke put low numbers with 1-5/8, it was like 250 ish. Dirty barrel. I’d guess with the Indian creek that’s enroute to me now [emoji51], I’ll hit 400+ with MOA and 350+ with BIG20XL

I remember shooting a bird with a good friend opening day quite a few years back. It was with federal 7 in a 20 gauge 870. The bird slap hung up at 55 and he'd refused to let the 3.5" hevi do work when the bird spooked so I dropped him. Really thought he was 45 or 50 max. I was shooting like 160 with an ssx. I can't imagine hunting again with such inferior shells. Lol, now that's saying something! Since I started handloading I can't remember a shot past 30. Most have been 20 or in, but let me switch back to lead and I'll have 5 birds in a row stop at 40!

I have a couple Indian creeks that I like shooting paper and missing turkeys with. I'm gonna hunt with a .584 or .575 from now on I believe unless the 20 moa proves itself to give me a much bigger swath at 20 yards than the 1 5/8. I'm going to try some duplex loads with 9.5 or maybe even 10s on top to see if it will do what I want.
It's either that or a new over/under!

Don’t get me wrong, I know Indian creek is tight , but I believe with the MOA, specifically with 9’s, and 775 ish pellets, a 400/350 pattern should be possible. Which would be very even/ huntable. If it’s not, I’ll use my factory choke or a Carlson’s .575

Hal’s 2 1/8oz 20ga load

Post by bowhunter2k9 »

Well I tested some chokes... the Carlson’s .575 shot better than the Indian creek .555 and stoeger factory .565 in all aspects. Was very even and way tighter than expected.

Stoeger M3020 with Carlson’s .575 extended choke shooting MOA 9’s.

10” - 391
10-20” - 275
