Success in Florida Quota Permit Draw

Post by jhogue »

My Dad and I applied separately for Florida quota permits in areas close to Disney World, so I can do a dual purpose trip during Spring Break in 2018. I applied to 3 areas with very small numbers of quotas and 2 areas with large numbers of quotas. I ended up drawing a permit in Richloam and my Dad drew a permit in Ocala Pipeline Unit. Both of these are the high quota areas. I’ve heard and found a little good and some questionable information about both of these areas. I’m debating turning my Richloam permit back in to get a preference point and trying my luck in some of the areas that don’t require a permit. Are there any hunters with spring turkey experience in these areas that have some recommendations? Thanks :turkeywave:

Can’t speak from experience on Ocala. Can on Richloam and Disney World.

I recommend going to Disney World first. It will help prepare you for the crowds at Richloam.

That should sound familiar Jason. Everything is going to be a crap shoot depending on both weather and interference from other hunters. On public land hope for a bird that only gobbles once and that you are the only one close enough to hear him. :struttin:

I tried Ocala once. My advice is look on aerials for houses. The turkeys will be around the feeders in those yards. I killed one on non-quota before I ever drew another quota. My reward to myself of killing an Osceola was to never hunt turkeys in FL again, so I can't comment on anything else.

Both areas get a lot of pressure. But there are birds in there and a quality hunt can be had if you put out the effort. Check the harvest statistics on the FWC website. That mite help. Might want to think about Irma and possible implications on this springs hunting. Just saying...... I heard the woods down there are a real mess in places.

Woods on those 2 areas are fine. Richloam tends to be wet. Irma added to that. Ocala is high and dry.
