April or May---Which is best ??

Post by boone5252 »

Planning on a trip out to Kansas and Nebraska next spring for my Rio and Merriam.
Because of my job, I can't leave until April 12th or May 12th---whichever month I choose.
Which would be the best month to hunt ?
If I wait until the middle of May, are the birds going to be more "out of the mood" to come to calls or is May good because the hens are nesting and the gobblers are lonely ??

Would appreciate some advice----thanks.

I'd prefer somewhere in between, but would lean towards May if I was traveling. From year to year you'll see some differences, but mainly in weather. I've never witnessed the magical time where all hens are running to their nest by mid morning and there are lonely toms everywhere. I deal with toms with hens from early April until the end of May.

Mid may if you're going to north west Nebraska.

I'm going to give this fall turkey season a try, lasts 4 months, Sept. 1 - Jan.1, not sure what month would be the best time to do this either, will let you all know how it works out.

My favorite time of a fall/winter season is an extreme warm front late as possible. Last year Jan 30th and 31st 4 gobblers bit the dust and gobbled to the calls.

I hunted Nebraska for merriams on opening morning which is in April and killed opening morning and headed home. Never hunted Kansas. That was in 2010. It was cold. 28 degrees Fahrenheit that morning and wind was strong.
