Shooter's Jinx has finally been lifted
Shooter's Jinx has finally been lifted
What a morning I got to share with my good friend today. I've been hunting a number of times with Shooter over the last few years and have had encounters with birds but never have been able to close the deal. That was until today.
I arrived yesterday afternoon to go and help him roost another bird for his Saturday hunt (he already had my bird roosted). We traveled over an hour and a half to a section of property only to realize that the fast way out was blocked by a tree in the road. Of course we had no saw or chain to move it and didn't want to make the 1.5 hour drive back so what do you do? You pull out the SW .44 mag and shoot the tree in half. Problem solved!
On to the turkey. Shooter said the bird was roosted somewhere in a recent burn. The plan was to enter the burn along a gas line way before daylight...like 4:30 am before daylight so we would have time to set up the decoys in the open burn and get hid before it got light. We did just that. Shooter figured they roosted about 100 yards from the gas line. As light began to break, the song birds started and at 5:15 he sounded off! However he is in the tree no more than 30 yards in front of us!!!!! Holy Crap!!! We start slowly grabbing masks. He is literally in shooting range in the tree. Around 5:25 another bird flies down and goes away from us. It was still pretty dark so we could not see what it was. Maybe another longbeard maybe a hen. Shooter gave out a Yelp and not long after that our gobbler flies down to our right on the gas line. He's in shooting range but I can't see him due to brush. Shooter hit him with a Yelp and gobble and that was all it took. He turned and headed our way on a dead sprint to the decoys. He cleared the tree to my right moving like a ghost in the night. I hit him with an aggressive cutt and he slammed on the brakes right in front of me at 15 yards. At 5:40 am he took a dirt nap. Fastest and earliest hunt I've ever had and one I will never forget.

Finally, the skunk is out of the bag for Tim. Way to go boys. Sounds like great fun. So how many rounds of .44 mag did it take to "saw" the tree in half?
Re: Shooter's Jinx has finally been lifted
Congrats on a fine bird and a great hunt with a great fella. So you gonnas nickname that .44 "The Chainsaw" ?
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Shooters Jinx My Butt!!!! More like WMA, or Timber Jinx!!
Yep Fellers, that had the makings of a botched hunt, written all over it! If you will look at the top pic, you will notice a light colored log
behind laying down about 30yds behind Tim. You will also notice my turkey vest and one of my flat dekes behind about 15 yds behind his right. That, is the gasline. The grassy part left to right. Straight over the mound of dirt that the turkey is posing is the tree he was roosted in.
We were sitting down in front of the log, leaning back on it when all this went down. Now, you tell me how the turkey didn't see our dark figures in front of that light colored log???? BTW, the turkey died about where my vest is at in the green grass!!
Yea Buddy, when that sucker gobbled, I didn't even look up. I just said to myself,... CRAP!!! We were just hanging out, waiting for the first gobble, and then position ourselves. Yea, Right!!
I'll take a hunt like that anytime. It makes up for the ones that make you end up feeling like an idiot,... like the one this morn!!
Glad you finally got one down here Tim, now Slicky is all alone in the 0 dept here. He's next I reckon!!
Yea, that Dirty Harry trick was not planned at all. We made it to within 300yds of getting back on paved road. I didn't even want to think about going back through all those muddy roads to get out. We tried double teaming the tree, but couldn't budge it. Yep, 240 grn XTP, with 23grns of H-110 behind it, took care of our problem with just a few well placed shots. 9mm, we would still be there.

Oh, I don't mind sharing Hawg, as long as I'm part of the battle that is!hawglips wrote:Congrats to you both! Tommy is mighty generous with his birds! And glad it worked out well.
I've invited you several times to come help out with these birds. That invite still stands, you know.
Still got two weeks left, and plenty of birds that are still out there gobbling.
