4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
I finished a life-time grand slam in 2002, with an osceola. I never tried to do it in one year, though I had the chance and didn't go on the final leg of the hunt.
However, this year I set out to do something a tad different. I wanted to kill one with the 4 competition (skeet) gauges -- 12, 20, 28 and .410. And I wanted to do it all with my own handloads.
On Saturday, I finished out the final piece of the 4 gauge slam:
March 24, GA
12 gauge
2 oz T98s
42 yds
April 14, VA
28 gauge
1-5/16 oz T9s
35 yds
April 28, NC
20 gauge
1-7/8 oz T9s
30 yds
May 5, NC
.410
3/4 oz T9sxPb6s
20 yds

Very nice. It is as much of an accomplishment as a handloader as it is as a turkey hunter.
Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
That is really cool. Way to go Hal.

Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
Way to go. I would like to try this one year also.
Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
Hal I think I am going to try and do that next year. What kind of 410 shell did you use and where did you get them?

All the shells used, including the .410, are my TSS handloads.TRKYHTR wrote:Hal I think I am going to try and do that next year. What kind of 410 shell did you use and where did you get them?

Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
Congratulations on the multi-gauge slam..... I have quail hunted over dogs but never turkey hunted with a 410 that would be a fun hunt.
When in doubt, show up early. Think less. Feel more. Ask once. Give thanks often. Expect the best. Appreciate everything. Never give up. Make it fun. Lead. Invent. Regroup. Wink. Chill. Smile. And live as if your success was inevitable, and so it shall be.
Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
I did the 4 gauge 'slam' again in 2015:
.410
28 ga
20 ga
12 ga
.410
28 ga
20 ga
12 ga

Congrats Hal. That's a pretty amazing achievement. When I read the title, my 1st though was: "HOLY CRAP!! HAL'S USING A PUNT GUN!! How the heck does he aim it??"

Lol, that's what thought also, my next thought was if a 12 bore uses 2 ounces of tss, how much does a 4 bore use?HunterGKS wrote:Congrats Hal. That's a pretty amazing achievement. When I read the title, my 1st though was: "HOLY CRAP!! HAL'S USING A PUNT GUN!! How the heck does he aim it??"

Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
Pretty awesome. How close are your .410 shots? You should add the 10 gauge to it.
Re: 4 gauge 'Grand Slam' on turkeys
I, too felt like an idiot once I finally understood the thread title. Duh! I was trying to imagine how much of any turkey would be left after absorbing all the shot from a 4 gauge.
How long before you work up some 16 gauge TSS loads Hal, or has it already been done?
