2019 New York Fall Turkey Season (Finally)

Post by HunterGKS »

Travel Day to The Roost

I left the house at 07:20 Friday morning, 10/18, &, after an uneventful drive, arrived
at the Norwich Civic Center (inside joke) at about 03:30 that afternoon. This was the
1st trip to NY with no rain. After dropping off 4 squirrels, a double batch of squirrel
chowda, a couple of jars of Cooper’s Mill jellies, & 3 pounds of Carle’s World Famous
Brats with Kathy, I headed to The Roost.

After settling in, we had a dinner of Carle’s Brats, cole slaw, tator & macaroni salad.

Day 1

We got up around 07:00 to a fairly heavy fog. We walked up though the sap woods to
the east & then north & dropped down to the drive lane. Ron headed down to the creek
with Jinger Lou & I walked ahead to the spring house. Not a bird was seen or hears.

We were sitting on the porch eating lunch when 3 birds appeared to the south along the
edge of the woods. Ron & JL went down to the edge & a flock took off. After talking out
a plan, Ron & JL headed off to find the birds while Allen, Ron’s son, & I took up stands in
different parts of the woods. Again, no birds.

Later that afternoon, we drove the Gator around looking but not finding any birds. We
had my venison chili for supper that night.

Day 2

It was clear Sunday morning. We again searched in the Gator with no success. We did a
lot of driving trying to find birds but they were no existent. Supper was my venison poppers
with the slaw, & salads. I tweaked my back Sunday evening & it was painful the rest of the trip.

Day 3

Monday morning dawned with a heavy fog again with the temp at 39 at 07:00. Ron & JL did a
walk-about while I waited at the ready with my cell phone turned on. Nada. We spent a couple
of hours hunting the woods across from The Roost with no luck. My back started yelping at me so
we headed back to camp. We did some more driving but the birds seemed to have left the area.
It did start to rain at about 12:15.

We did head to the Rockdale Gun Club where I took a stand & Ron & JL tried to hunt up some birds
with no luck. Supper was my venison stew.

Day 4

Tuesday morning there was more fog with a temp of 36 at 07:30. We drove to some friends’ house
& started walking at about 09:20. We walked for almost 3 hours before getting back to the house.
I don’t think my back would have allowed much more walking. We didn’t see/hear a single bird.
After lunch, Ron & I headed back to The Roost. As we neared the gun club, we spotted a flock of 7
red heads along the edge of the woods. We could have hunted them, but my back & legs were
extremely painful & I didn’t think it would have been a good idea for me to try to walk very far.
We had spaghetti with my venison Bolognese sauce.

Travel Day Home

I left The Roost at about 07:30 in a heavy fog which didn’t burn off for almost 2 hours. The rest of
the 5 ½-6 hour drive was either into a strong head wind or a strong cross wind, which wrecked by
MPG. At some point Monday or Tuesday, we stopped at Wally World where I bought a heating pad.
My truck has AC outlets so I drove all the way home with the pad against my back. It helped a lot.
My legs, hips, & back finally returned to “normal” by Saturday.

THANKS AGAIN RON & KATHY!!!! I ENJOYED MYSELF ONCE AGAIN AS USUAL!!!! LOOKING FORWARD
TO MAY 1, 2020!!!!

It's always a good time & I'd take camp food over almost any other.

Always a good time. I've had back problems for years & it might be time to do something about it.
