fall hunt pics

I don't have many cool fall hunting pictures, but I'd love to see some.

Here's a few mediocre ones but probably the best fall-themed that I've got:

My daughter trying to call one up - you have to wear orange in VA while woods goat season is on.

Last fall was my first attempt at fall turkeys. I was covered in turkeys each day I hunted, but I really had a hard time telling toms from jakes, I just couldn't see the beards very well. This year, I will have a pair of good binos handy and will be patient. After passing up about 3 dozens turkeys over 3 days that I couldn't tell if they were toms or jakes, I finally just shot the biggest turkey that came by, ended up being a Jake.

I know hunting in VA isn't the same situation as hunting UT, but I got no problem shooting a jake in the fall.

Here's one I shot in '12:

I haven't got too many fall turkeys. Maybe 15 or so over all the years I have turkey hunted and most of my earlier fall birds were what I can "BOO" birds. "Birds Of Opportunity".

Got a few pics tho.

The Colo fall season begins Sept 1st so there are some pretty small poults about. Here is one with a mourning & collard dove, and my 16ga AYA #2.

Image

I have learned to target the small poults. They are a delicacy to eat. About the size of a rooster pheasant. I marinate them in teriyaki and sort of half smoke them on the Weber.

Image

I also get a few turkeys in Wis on my annual fall trip there.

Image

I like fall turkey hunting but there is just so many other birds to hunt. One of my favorites is the ruffed grouse. Hey...they kinda look like little turkeys. :D Very challenging to hit on the wing in the thick Wis woods, and I get some neat dog work hunting them also.

A 1994 WV double. That's me on the left with a nice jake with a 6 1/2" thick beard. This was before I really knew much about fall hunting. We just went to an area that we knew birds frequented & blind called. My buddy got a jennie.

2009 NY with a nice hen & a great turkey dog.

2009 WV hen taken at 25 yards with a .17.

2010 I got a double off a break by Cutter, the dog in the pic, with about a 15 minute lull between the 2. That's Curt, Cutter's Pops with a bird he killed from the same break. Ron, I forget Curt's last name. Help??

I haven't got very many fall pics. I was very sporadic bout taking pics of things I killed. These are pictures I took with my phone of printed pics. I just got a smart phone last year or so. I was real sporadic bout taking pics of things I killed. I would some and not others but I'm getting better bout it since I carry my phone while hunting now.
Here's a few fall pics. Not real good scenery of fall but here's a few killed in the fall.

Some of you may not realize that I used to do the fall turkey hunting thing when I was growing up. Florida had a fall season back then (60's-70's) and I liked turkey hunting better than deer or hog hunting, so that was mainly what we hunted. First and last picture is of my first ever turkey which was a hen. Killed it sitting with my Dad. Shot it with a Revalation bolt action 410 loaded with 13/16 oz. TSS 9's at a lasered 42 yards.
Image
2nd picture is of my Dad. We pretty much learned as we went. Their was no internet, tv hunting shows, or loose lips back then. So most of it was trial and error. I'm glad I grew up in that era. No computer, tv, dvd or internet turkey hunter could have taught us the lessons we learned on our own. Made for some mighty fine and memorable camp fire talk. I can remember some of the conversations with both my Dad and Mom like it was yesterday.
Image
I don't have many fall pictures saved on the computer. Their in albums at my parents house in Florida. I need to make it a point to scan them all. They are priceless to me. The rest of the pictures are just random. Some I have never shared before and am doing so against better judgment.
