Charged

Post by appalachianassassin »

On Saturday I was hunting on a farm I take care of. On this farm I have 2 food plots that are out of sight from each other. I wasn't seeing **** at the plot I was watching so I decided to go check the other right at dark. There is a road that tees into the center of the plot. Left of the road is thick and impossible to see through. I get 30 feet from the edge of the plot and hear something running from the left corner of the plot toward the road. I immediately think buck running a doe and shoulder my gun incase it is something big. Round the corner comes this large bear squealing as if being shocked by a cattle prod and charging me at mach speed. He was on me in a fraction of a second. I leaned into my gun and when all I could see off the end of my barrel was black I pulled the trigger and turned and ran like hell. Got about 50 feet away and heard him grunting back where I shot him so I knew I had at least slowed him down. I stopped, chambered another round and smoked him again. 2nd shot killed him instantly. When I shot him the first time he was 20 inches off the end of my gun.

Holy crap! Good instinctive shooting! What were you shooting?
You rarely hear of black bear doing that but it does happen. Good thing you were armed and calm and collected enough to think and shoot straight!
Ooh-Rah!! Well done, Sir!!

All my bear hunting has been with hounds in NM, WI and ME. Way different game when they are up a tree or bayed with dogs. My hat is off to you.

Bears are an unbelievable animal, solid muscle with nothing in life to do but survive. Glad it had a positive outcome for you. They are a major pain on the ass here in Western Mass.

Great shooting, good job holding it together on a nice bear.

I guess the old question of "does a bear poop in the woods" would still be unanswered as any poop in the area could of came from unnamed
sources.

I take back all the things I’ve ever said about using a 300 win mag for deer. At least for those hunting deer in bear country. Glad it worked out like it did.

Bwahaha I was gonna ask the same. Not that I'd judge if you didn't even a CO if you didn't have a tag called and explained wouldn't write you up, probably let you have it. You gotta do something wth that bear, rug, shoulder mount. Imagine if you ever have grandkids telling that story.

Bear meat was a staple in college, now wash your soiled pants.
