Day 1 - 5 of the 2018 Ohio Deer Season
Day 1 - 5 of the 2018 Ohio Deer Season
Day 1
I got back to my stand at 06:45 with the temp at 45, sprinkling, & windy. By 07:10, the rain had
gotten harder & the wind stronger. I saw a gray red squirrel, something I have never seen before.
I also saw several foxes out in the bean field munching on left over beans. Occasionally they would
find a walnut & carry it back into the woods to add to their winter larder.
At 10:43, I spotted movement in the south section of the woods to my right. It was a coyote
moving north. He stayed right in side the woods never giving a shot.
At 12:23, it started to snow & the wind picked up again. Between 12:00 & 01:00, there were
8 shots, 2+3+2+1, from the far east end of the woods. At 01:14, 7 does & fawns ran across
the bean field from east to west to the south end of the south section. They never got close
enough for a shot. Those were the only deer I saw all day.
By 02:30, the temp had dropped to 32, the snow had gotten heavy, & the wind was blowing
it into the stand. I decided to call it a day as opposed to sitting there & getting wet. On the
way back to the truck, I had to drive directly into the snow which was no fun at all. In fact,
it was kind or stingy!! If the roads aren’t icy tomorrow, I’ll be out again.
Day 2
When I got up at 06:00 this morning, it was 28 with a strong wind giving a wind chill of 17.
My road was icy. I decided to not go out. I don’t enjoy the cold at all & won’t subject myself
to it if at all possible.
Day 3
When I got up at 06:00 this morning, it was 24 with a strong wind giving a wind chill of 17.
Back to bed.
Day 4
When I got up at 06:00 this morning, it was 24 with a strong wind giving a wind chill of 15.
A rain/snow mix was also forecast starting around 0900. Back to bed.
Before anyone gives me a hard time about not going out Tue-Thur, let me explain my philosophy.
If there is an activity that I enjoy & is fun becomes, due to circumstances, becomes un-enjoyable
& un-fun, I don’t perform that activity. Sitting in the woods in mid-20 degree temperatures with
a strong wind causing a wind chill in the mid-15s, is not enjoyable or fun for me, so I don’t do it.
Day 5
It was 32, calm, & very foggy when I got to my stand this morning. I had forgotten to put on my
foot warmer pads so, at 10:40, when my toes started tingling, I fired up the Mr. Heater Portable
Buddy on high. When things started steaming, I tried to move the heater & found out that high
produces a lot of heat so I dialed it down to low. It got comfortable in about 15 minutes.
At 11:30, I heard a snort to my right & saw 2 deer moving south. I could see them moving south
into the next section. At 11:35, they came out of the south section into the field about 40 yards
from me. I decided to pass. They both turned & started walking straight to me. Based on the
fact that I was see very few deer & the forecast call for rain all day tomorrow, I decided if 1 gave
me a broadside shot, I would take it. The front deer turned facing west & gave me a perfect shot
at 20 yards, which I took at 11:37. I actually saw the impact of the slug which has happened only a
few times. It jumped & turned in the air angling away from me when it came down running. This
is where it got interesting. When she hit the ground after the jump, I saw something fly out of the
exit hole. I wondered to myself: “Self, I wondered, what the heck was that??” When I went out to
start trailing, as I could see that it ran out of sight, I found about ½ a liver on the ground. I have
never seen anything like this. She had run at least 200 yards into the woods leaving a blood trail that
even a blind man could follow.
After I drug he2 back to my stand, cleaned her, & put her in the back of the 4-wheeler, I sat back
down at12:34. I had a few phone calls to make as well as hanging the deer, & a few other things,
I headed in at 02:00. Not sure what tomorrow will bring due to the forecast of rain all day but I’ll at
least get up & check out the weather.
Looking W out of my stand to where I saw the deer.
Looking SW to where the deer were wandering.
Looking SW to where they came out about 50 yards south of the corner.
Looking S to where I took the 20 yard shot.
It was still foggy at 12:00.
I found this lucky horseshoe near where the doe was standing when I took the shot. Lucky for me, not so much for her.
The piece of liver.

Good looking spot Jorge. That orange thing on her head, was that a blindfold? Congrats on the venison!

Thx Ronniealdo. I have killed a lot of deer from the spot over 25+ years. That's a holder for the tag. We have to
tag them before we move them & the holder protects the paper tag.

Congrats, George! She’ll eat just fine..
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Re: Day 1 - 5 of the 2018 Ohio Deer Season
I've been deer hunting for 50+ years & have killed I don't know how many but
I've never seen anything like that on any deer I've shot, any friends or family
have shot, or on TV. I have seen intestines hanging out from a low gut shot
but that's not really unusual.
Thx.
