Seems a little excessive. Just take the deer and $300 fine. Like Georgia from what I hear.

Unless he has a half dozen other game infractions on his history, that is an excessive punishment.

A jury trial? Yeesh. That'll teach him to plead not guilty.

I gotta agree with you there. Baiting is baiting. 2 gallons or 5 gallons or 55 gallons or a semi load.
I realize the CWD factor with saliva and all but if it’s a problem, eliminate it. Don’t “kinda” eliminate it. Just my 2 cents worth.

I believe the main issue, is the DNR trying to get a handle on CWD to manage it and still maintain the hunter confidence. They're in contact with other states on what they've seen with CWD and are trying to be PRO on adopting rules for control of CWD.

These blatant type of violations aren't called for.
Remember, they were checking on a report of a violation, and not looking for it to start with, so another hunter must have though that fella was gonna' git' all the deer in the area :LMAO:

As part of his penalty, he should be required to pick up all the corn..............by hand..............a kernel at a time.

He should also be required to pick up all the sugar beets..............by hand..............a beet at a time.

You gotta good point there, Timber...
I guess there’s a fine line between sitting over a baitpile of any size and a field that you plant as feed for deer.
It surely can be debated as to which is more ethical.
I would guess that either one would/will promote CWD.

well... the baitpile was a bit overboard but the fine was a little overboard too. baiting anything makes me very unhappy but damn, don't bankrupt someone for it.

I imagine if he had put out a sign saying "Deer Feed For Sale" he'd be ok. DNR says those nose to nose feeding is the problem inre: to cwd and tb. Food plots at least spread the deer out a bit.

I call BS its in the ground also !

Also I have a feeder I run year round and see a the deer come in usually one or 2 at a time feed a bit then leave. I have a camera on my buddies food plot and the deer congregate there for hours at a time all in close proximity with lots of nose to nose contact !

Plus I lost most respect for the dnr when here in Ontario they cancelled the spring bear hunt because some rich guy said he would stop donating millions to the ruling parties coffers if they didn't !

He paid the price for not accepting responsibility. What was he thinking? He wasn't penalized for exercising his right to trial by jury, he just wasn't rewarded for accepting responsibility by pleading guilty. Not the first time I've seen idiots pay the price for thinking they can game a jury. The sentence accomplishes two things: punishment of him and deterrence of others. As for bankrupting him, if someone can afford 5000 pounds of bait, the fine may be in line with his ability to pay, but also hurt.

Apparently from a lot of the research I've read they are called prions and they are left in the soil by infected animals where they can remain for years being taken up into plants etc.
