My 2017 SC Pine Goat Season
Posted: December 7th, 2017, 3:37 pm
Cashed in my last free SC resident buck tag this past Friday evening. Was a great year. Got to take my oldest boy two times and we killed a good doe his first hunt, best hunt of the year!
Had some disappointment the end of October as I shot a good buck but could not find any sign past the hit point, 270 Winchester with 130 grain Barnes. Looked for him for about 6 hrs total and found nothing.
Went the next evening, October 28th, had 4 does come out to the plot. Watched them for a while when this old boy came charging in grunting and smelling.
Did not hunt for a couple weeks but got back on November 10th. Saw a decent buck that morning but he was too quick or I was too slow, slipped on by me. Went back that evening and sat same plot I killed first buck. Had 16 come out to the plot, 3 were bucks. Watched a small 4 point with no brow tines chase does for 20 minutes. This guy and another came running in the plot but did not give him time to chase.
Have not had time to go and honestly did not know when I would. Started ducking hunting when the season came in and after it was over I got the itch to get back in a tree. Earlier in the week my supervisor called and said I had a couple hours I needed to use or lose before the end of the year so there was my chance.
Got in stand about 3:30 and five does popped out at 5:25. About 10 minutes later this guy popped out, redemption in the stand I lost the first buck from. I honestly thought he was a little bigger but I guess my eyes fooled me in the low light, regardless I was happy to put him down. Was a fun hunt!
So I am done now and it was one of the most fun deer seasons I have had in a long time. Got to spend time in the woods with my boy and seen more rutting than I ever have.
Good luck to those still going out and be safe! My wind has turned to the swamp for ducks when it comes back in and more importantly Spring.
