2017 Ohio Deer Chronicles – 6

Day 6

It was 28, calm, & clear at 07:00 when I got to my stand. I fired up my Buddy right away. It has 2 settings, low & high. Yesterday, I left it on low but bumped it up to high about 07:15. I didn’t have time to see how warm it would get. An owl greeted me from the west & talked to me for about 10 minutes. At 07:25, a doe showed up heading into the west woods. I have no idea where she came from, she just magically appeared. At 07:30, 2 does came out of the SE corner of the west woods. They wandered a bit, kept looking back into the woods & then headed straight towards me turning to angle across in front of me at about 35 yards. The lead doe stopped broad side &, at 07:35, did the “jump-kick” at the shot. This is usually a good sign but she ran into the woods hell bent for leather!! My 1st thought: “OH CRAP!! (or something like that) Another tracking job!!” 10 more deer came flying out of the woods, at least 2 bucks, milled around in the field. They were still there when I walked along the edge of the woods & found her lying just inside the woods.

To quote Dandy Don: ‘TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTIES OVER!!!!” Now I can start looking forwards to spring turkey season (not that I ever stopped.)

The bottom of the 1st pic is the edge of the field.

I drilled this 1.

I turned off the water to the butcher room & blew out the pipes this morning as it's supposed to drop into the 20s - 30s. I have an outside faucet in the same line &, when I went out to open it, the ground was white & crunchy. It was pretty cold.

Oh, my wife & I had been gone and golfin' on an island somewhere in the Caribbean :LMAO: :stir:

I used to play golf & was just starting to break 100 when I quit. I did hit a couple of good balls during my last round. I stepped on a trap rake!! :pukeright: :pukeleft:

Good job Jorge. Tell the truth. Your old and your eyes are bad. You shot at the lead buck and hit the last doe.

Thx Ronnie. The truth is, a couple of years ago I had cataract surgery on both eyes & can probably see better than you.
But then again, Goober, I mean Gomer, I mean Jethro, your eyes are so old that you probably use coke bottles for eye glasses.

The 4-wheeler did all the dragging on this 1 but the 1st 1 had to be drug between 50-75 yards & it took at least an hour. 15-20' & rest. 15-20' & rest, & so one.
I refuse to be a statistic!!

I lift weights at least twice a week but damned if I ain't sore from pulling her out & getting the 2nd 1 hung. I will be buying a new pulley system b4 next year.
The original 1 I used on the big doe is an easy left as it has 2 double wheeled pulleys but the other is just a single wheel. I used the lawn tractor to get her up.

Yep. Mine are so bad I shot at a turkey and killed the farmers goose instead. When I first walked up to it and it didn't have a beard or Spurs I thought I had shot a hen.

So are you done deer hunting now? What about squirrels?

Yep. All done. I could have gotten a 3rd tag as we still have the 16th & 17th to hunt but it's enough work processing 2 let alone 3. Will be too damned cold to bushy hunt. Not enough return for the effort when it's in the 30s or colder.

Both deer have been cut up. Tomorrow I plan to package roast & chunks for chili & spaghetti sauce. I will make some jerky & sausage as well.

I'm a little behind in my responses. Friends in Meigs did very little this gun season other than youth weekend. Most waiting on the upcoming weekend hunt and late muzzleloader in January. I went up - ONCE - for that January muzzleloader hunt. Leaving 70 degree FL for a 10 degree OH hunt was a little much  . Probably won't make it back until spring :struttin:

I'll bet ya' got one heck of a pile of venison ready to package
Now that was just a "putterin' round" day, wasn't it ;)
