First Archery hunt in 8 years

Post by ICDEDTURKES »

So Sal and I had a little time back from guiding in KS and with the beautiful colors and fall woodsy smell we decided we would give archery hunting a chance.. I have also been yearning to get the rescue boxer I posted on here on a blood trail as she is all over anything, she catches rabbits, robins, squirrels, chipmunks and anything else that comes around..

Sal and I decided we were shooting the first legal deer that came in whether it be doe, fawn, 5 point whatever.. Our landowner wanted meat and he does not discriminate with what he eats..

I took my normal shower with axe body wash and old spice deoderant.. Through on my wrangler work khakis and a hoodie and grabbed my original Hooks hat from 6 years ago soaked in sweat.. I went to a small aluminum shack I have shot plenty of deer out of and the wind was perfect. About an hour before dark I had 10 doe move through at about 40 yards.. I did not feel confident with the distance as I am somewhat unfamiliar with the X bow..

Sitting their bored out of mine, remembering why I did not deer hunt a whole lot, he appeared in the neighbors.. I could see he was a decent buck and he hopped the fence.. He began working a tree 35 yards away but his vitals were obscured. Knowing which way he was going I settled the X bow on the window and waited.. He got in my lane and I made the infamous BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT to stop him.. I hit the trigger and he began to run for about 20 yards and than began walking.. I honestly thought I missed, the speed of the X bow you have no clue what happened. :dontknow: He went another 20 yards and I swear I saw him crash.. But I was still convinced I missed.. I texted Sal saying I had missed an 8..

So at dark Sal and I convene at the truck.. She ended up seeing a 120ish 8 but only had head and neck shots.. We hopped in the truck to pick up "Cougar" and go back to look for blood..

Sal I and the Cougar Booger go to where I had shot and the Cougar immediately starts pulling Sally through the woods to where I thought the deer fell over.. About that time I find blood on a downed white birch and call them back.. Cougar once again pulls Sally, this time to the arrow 20 yards behind first blood.. With the Red maple leaves blood was hard to find so we relied on the nose of Cougar and she took us right to the deer.. I was happier about the dog than killing the deer, I am so happy for her..

Not a KS giant but a good deer for back home.. Told Sal on our way that we would kill something when we "half assed" it rather than taking it serious.

Sorry about the crappy Pic, "Flipper" my flip phone stinks

Way to go! Been doing better than me! Did kill two coyotes in the stand so that was a plus in my few times of deer waiting.

When I was a kid, my buddy and I would hunt rabbits and pheasant with his boxer. He was all we had so we gave him a try. He was an almost unbelievable tracker and would retrieve (most of the time). First and only boxer that I ever hunted with.
His name was Major Hoople.. They are cool dogs.

Congrats on the goat. The last one I killed reminded me of why I quit.

I hear ya Big Time. I hunted most of my life with top notch bows that were nice and quiet. Now, I have this dang noisy X-bow.
I have put every silencer known to man on it, but it still has a nasty thwaak!!! Even put an $80 string stopper kit on it. Helped a little, but I still have to keep shots under 30, or else they jump it. Shot at one at a lasered 60 two years ago. Arrow went exactly where it was supposed to go. Problem was, deer was already 10 ft from it!!!
