old turkey call (gibson).

Post by willie »

we have been cleaning out my step fathers 3 sheds and 2 car garage for about 3 weeks now a couple of days a week (he was a hoarder) stacked to the ceiling with just a little path to walk.AL is his name and he is in a nursery home (85 years old).we have found guns with stickers on them.silver dollars and silver 50 cent pieces and everything in between. but one thing that was very kool was a GIBSON box caller in great shape.i think gibson was one of the first to make box callers.anybody have a gibson box caller.a month before AL had his stroke we tried to get him to let us clean up the sheds etc. and he agreed but as soon as we would go home and come back he would put it back in shed etc.i have never seen this before except on t.v..we are going to liquidate things to help on the 4500.00 a month nursing home build.

i don't know how to post pic, caller isn't fancy and looks to be made out of mahogany.our latest find was a browning a-5 wrapped up in a gun sock tied to rafters ( ).it is a browning light 12 gauge.it has 2 rusted spots on barrel the size of a pencil eraser.no dimples or nicks on stock anywhere.

Henry Gibson was the one to have first box call patent in 1897. Doubt he was first to make one. The one that went for crazy money on ebay was a one of kind, pristine custom woodburned thing if I am thinking right. If so, I held that one in my hand and ran it a couple licks (carefully) 2 years ago and it was for sale again....$35K if I remember right. It really is all about condition. Does it have the original box, ect. I have seen quite a few pretty decent ones sell for $500ish. That is just the call, no box and showing signs of wear and use. And he made solid body calls and calls with glued on sides. Makes a difference. And he made quite a few calls too. Not as rare as you might think. But it all depends on who wants it ... bad enuff. Still $500 for an old piece of wood aint too shabby when ya think about it. Heck of a nice find tho! Sounds like a treasure trove to me. Keep diggin! There is gold in them there....sheds.
