Changing calls

Post by john donovan »

How long should I use a call without getting a response before switching to a different call?

Lots of what ifs to your question. You may not be getting a response because the birds are not there. It might be better to change your location.

If they don't answer the first call I use they are not going to answer any other call I have on me.

I would have to DISAGREE.
Many many many times when I am walking
And calling in attempt to locate a gobbler,
I will try different calls from the same location.
I will often get a response from one and
Not another.

Now if I have located a bird and he isn't responding
Well and not coming my way, he prolly has hens or is on his way to a strut
Zone.
Sometimes a different call may work but
Not the norm....
So there really is NO GOOD answer to your
Question.

Turkey hunting savvy comes with years of hunting
Them. Some is instinctive on your part, some is experience
And Woodsmanship, but often it's a lot of luck finding
A bird that wants to play the game. :turkeywave:

I don't carry more than 2 calls on me so in my years of experience I know which call will get a response of the 2 I carry. :struttin:
I guess the 15 that got called in this spring and died didn't mind that I never used the other call in my pocket.

This year I pretty much only used two calls. But I use them to sound like multiple birds quite often. I have a lot of confidence in those calls. Sometimes a bird just wants to die and responds to whatever. But sometimes there is a big difference between the response you get from different calls, and at those times it pays to have more sound optins at your disposal.

Not sure if you mean a different type of call,box.pot.etc .or a different sounding call such as yelp, purr, cluck. I would try everything you got . I covered what seemed like the entire state one morning without hearing anything.Used every call I had and made every call I knew how to make. Nothing. Then in frustration I rapped the back of my pot with the striker to make a woodpecker sound. Gobbler went crazy and hammered at everything I threw at him. Guess I just had to wake him up. Welcome to GN from a fellow Michigander.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.
