Rebuilt Horseshoe Pits

About 8 years ago I built a set of pits using old lumber I found in my barn. It held up fairly well until 2 years ago when the wood started to rot. I decided the pits needed to be rebuilt so I picked up some pressure treated 2x6s, 2x2s, & the hardware I needed. I built both of the boxes & the frames for the covers & got 1 of the boxes set over 2 afternoons. I got 1 of the covers built on another afternoon.
This is what 1 of the old pits looked like. When I built them, I laid the plastic sand bags on the bottom to stop weed growth. It didn’t work as weed & grass seeds landed on the sand & germinated. About 2 weeks before this pic was taken I sprayed with round up &, after several days, cleaned up all the dead growth. As can be seen, the weeds/grass is already starting to come back. I plan to get some long lasting herbicide to spray in the pits after our family get together on the 20th. Between that & the covers, I'm hoping to solve the wed problem.
Hopefully the pressure treated wood will last for a lot longer then the original old wood I used. It's a lot of work rebuilding them.

The top of a cover. The metal is left over from when I had my new building put up. I didn’t have enough of 1 color for either cover so 1 is green & white, the other red & green. I will be using 2 lag bolts on each end of both covers to hold them down.

The cover attached to the top of the pit with 4 lag bolts, 2 on each end. With all the strong winds we have around here, I wanted to be sure the covers didn’t blow away.
