Big Tom down

Post by Jaybird »

Finally, sealed the deal in Kansas. Will post pics later: 21 & 6oz, beard 11 3/8, spurs 1 1/4. Would have weighed more if I hadn't blown a hole completely thru the head bigger than the shell. How close, I know will be asked: this close, but he was turned sideways.

Would like credit for another est. 6 oz of lost bird from this shot.

Nice bird man congrats!
Actually from that distance it was a rifle slug. As you can see by no opening of the pattern, there isn't really no room for error on that shot. From that distance the whole head filled my sights though. This bird was a definite tough sucker, because he actually bled to death from the shot vs dying outright. He was still flashing hooks at me when I went to grab him, and he had some of the nastiest hooks I've seen out of a Midwestern bird in a while. To me this bird looked 100% Rio, which out of this particular area is the norm, but listed as Hybrids on the NWTF chart.
