Go with a scope, that's the most simply in my opinion. If the red dot has brightness adjustments then you have to worry about if its bright enough, too bright or what. If he has a scope, then there's no thinking.

I'm a red dot guy. No magnification to deal with. I have used them for years.

I am a scope guy myself, most everyone has a scoped rifle or two so he should have no problem with that. My friend had a battery on a red dot go out once.Just my 2cents.

I use both, I have a nikon 1x4 Monarch that if set on 1x you can keep both eyes open just like a red dot. Lifetime warranty on the monarch. I also use a fastfire III, you have one setting that automatically adjusts the red dot for the available light, and three other manual settings. With the red dot you can keep both eyes open and it helps in acquiring a target fast. Hope this helps. The fastfire 3 has a 10,000 hr battery life. With a low battery alarm. With a Lifetime warranty, as of Jan 1, 2014

I have both. Red dot or Holo for shotguns and turkeys. Scope for deer.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

I use a scope. I've never tried a red dot but don't need to try anything else because my scope works great.

Scope guy also. That Nikon with the 27 or 30 mm objective & 1.4-5 power is super nice. It's what I have on my 11-87.

Plus no battery to go dead. I do however have a red dot on a ruger super redhawk, but I've been contemplating replacing it with a scope as well.

Trijicon Reflex or RMR red dots for those who worry about batteries going dead. No batteries, but a tritium lamp supplemented with fiber optics illumination. Very expensive, however. The battery life of most is measured in years, not hours. It's a simple preventive maintenance job to replace the battery every season whether it needs replacement or not or every other year for those who worry about the issue. As for battery powered ones, it is hard to find a bad one that costs over $100.00.

I like and use both. The red dot may be easier. For what it is worth, I will be hunting the rest of the season with no dot or scope, just plain old bead.

FF III red dot for me due to super light weight. I of course use scopes on rifles for the magnification, but don't have to tote them mile after mile up and down mountains. A scope on an 1187 is a beastly proposition weight wise. Will never hunt turkeys without a red dot again. Dot on bird's head = dead bird. Battery life is amazing as well.

Count me in the red dot group
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have no need for a 30-06, I have a shotgun

Where the dot lies, the shot flies. Most of the time. Sometimes the dot must not be on the head when the trigger is pulled. ;)

Battery life is really not an issue anymore. They last for multiple seasons. For the minimal cost of a battery, though, you would be foolish not to change it out every spring, and not have to worry about a failure. Red is dead..Everytime!!

Well, I'm a wingshooter by heart, so I don't use either. When my eyes get bad enough, I guess I'll go to a Red Dot. That is pretty much what all my Turkey buds use, and they seem to like them.

Red dot for me and my daughter, but they aren't really effective when they are shooting 12" high. Take it from me...I know firsthand.

:? 12" high? I'm sure you "0" it in, or is it moving after "0"?

Dropped the gun on a big rock and it knocked the site off....didn't realize it until I missed a turkey.
