Federal Heavyweight #6
Federal Heavyweight #6
Anyone have any experience using the 20 gauge Federal Heavyweight #6 shot? In particular the 3" - 1 1/2 oz. - #6 load?

Much better options available out there. If you're set on Fed HWT, shoot the 7s, not the 6s.

Re: Federal Heavyweight #6
I agree that the 7s are a far better option.
Re: Federal Heavyweight #6
I agree fellas but the 7s are just not as plentiful as the 6s are....to be honest I could find Jimmy Hoffa easier than the 7s . Now that's for finding some that someone ain't trying to get an arm, leg, and 4 toes for. 6s are @ Roger's right now and they are at a great price. I was just wondering if anyone had used the 6s with good results.

With @247 pellets in a 11/2 oz 20ga load pattern density will be the only issue. If your gun will pattern them good there sure won’t be a problem with penetration! I’d shoot them before any lead 20ga load

I would think they may need a little more open choke than the 7's. Only way to know is to shoot a few. If they don't work well you will have some awesome duck and pheasant loads.

They shot very well for me in an 1187 with 26” barrel, Remington Super Full choke. Another option for you is to hand load HWT 7s.

Re: Federal Heavyweight #6
I bought a bunch of the 10ga 2oz loads of heavyweight 7s just to rob the shot for reloading. At 14.99 a box of 5 that works out to 24$ a pound for shot. I loaded a few 12ga 2 oz loadsRapscallionVermilion wrote: ↑June 9th, 2019, 11:11 am They shot very well for me in an 1187 with 26” barrel, Remington Super Full choke. Just as an FYI:

If you shot the old Fed HWs & want to stick with them, buy all you can.

Re: Federal Heavyweight #6
As confirmation to my previous post, I sent the following to Federal this morning:
"Has Federal discontinued the original heavyweight turkey shells & replaced them with TSS?"
Their response:
"Yes they have been replaced with the TSS."

Re: Federal Heavyweight #6
Because Heavyweight #6s are $15/box right now with free shipping over $100 @ Roger's sporting goods. And if a person can get hwt 6s to pattern good they are hitting alot harder than even TSS 9s. Now before some folks' feathers get ruffled about me making a statement about something hitting harder than TSS 9s keep in mind I'm talking 3 pellet sizes bigger.

Another good option I suppose are the Kent TK7 penetrator loads .

They are awesome rounds and at $15 a box they are a steal. I have two set ups. One shoots them in the 120s they other shoots them in the 140s......yep thats right #6s. They like 570 chokes out of both guns.
And there are still some states that dont allow tss.

I have a 21” 870 with a Sumtoy 562-5 that will consistently do 110 - 120 with them and I have a few boxes put away just in case.
A buddy has a pardner single shot with a 22” modified barrel that does 90-100 with them consistently. He too has a few put back.
