Vortex Viper Red Dot?

Post by kythunter »

Anybody use a Vortex Viper red dot?
I was seriously considering the Venom but Optics Planet.com has the Viper on sale for 174.99
Going to run one on an 870 20ga (TSS #9 hand loads).
From what I've read compared to the Venom the Viper is lower profile and 6MOA (standard). The Viper uses an older style battery which is more difficult to replace compared to the Venom.
Just curious if anyone uses the Viper and how you like it.

I have a Viper and a Venom plus a FFIII

I think the Viper is sturdier than the Venom but I think both actually shift from shooting turkey loads. Reason is they shift and have caused missed turkeys and have had to shoot and adjust again during turkey season.

The Burris FFIII has stayed true after dialed in.

That's no good. Which base did you use on the Vortex's?

Sumtoy makes a rock solid base it had to be the sight. With that said I've read a lot of good reviews on the Venom and will probably go with it. Vortex's warranty is hard to beat.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hoobilly,
Look at the screws that came with the base. I'll bet they are too short. If you're not using all of the threads that are cut into the receiver things have a tendency to move. Same goes for the screws that hold the sight to the base. I have an FF3 on an OR3GUN base a Vortex Venom on a SumToy base and a Vortex Razor Red Dot on an EGW base. None of the sights or bases came with screws that were long enough.
Brownells has a kit of long screws you can grind to the right length.

I've used a Venom for 2 seasons and had no issues with POI shifting. And my gear sees more use in 1 season than most folk's equipment sees in several.
