Remington 1100 DU edition turkey hunting?

Post by Bobby.gibson »

I have a 1973 Remington 1100 du edition it’s a 2 3/4 12 gauge with a full choke barrel not threaded and I was wondering if I could use this to get me started into turkey hunting this will be my first year turkey hunting any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bobby

Remington 1100 DU edition turkey hunting?

I would get some ammo for turkey and try patterning. I have my patterns set 20 - 60 yards in 10 yard increments. Like you, I am an old school gun guy so anything beyond 35 yards just gets a pass.

There are many smarter people on this forum than I so keep an eye out! I’m a pattern guy for sure but not super freaky - I just prefer best kill shot patterns at all yardages.

This is 20-50 yards. Patterned my 1962 Sweet 16 yesterday with a gobble dot.

about the cheapest best turkey load is a 2 3/4" Long Beard Winchester load. I would try 5's or 6's

You also can have that barrel threaded for choke tubes very reasonably priced. If you decide to go that route, then Indian Creek 665 and TSS Tennessee Twisters in the 2oz 2 3/4" load in 8's or 9's is gonna turn that DU 12ga into the gun of the year fosho

I am going to use the bolt action 16 gauge I rebuilt, this coming season and will be shooting, Golden Pheasant 16 gauge Nickle Plated Lead 5 shot, 1 1/8 oz. shot and 1310 muzzle velocity. I too do not push for anything farther than about 35 yards so I believe these should be a good fast load to do the job with a clean kill.

Bobby,
I think Apex Ammunition will have a 2 3/4" TSS load soon. The TSS shot should make it a super turkey gun with no choke work needed.
Get there early, stay late, sit still and don't use weather as an excuse to stay home.

I have a 2 3/4" TSS load that shoots bad to the bone. Its Tommy's aka Shooters recipe

as far as chokes, the Full choke might work well enough. Depending on shot size used I bet.

Bobby them lead Winchester loads are cheap enough, buy a box and shoot them. Once you've patterned them and if they won't pattern well enough, holler at me and I can send you a #8 TSS load to try out.

Ok I will I’m going to ky gun co this weekend to look at a squirrel gun and to also pick up some 2 3/4 turkey loads and I’ll
Definitely hit you up on those loads if these don’t work they are should work I’ve heard good and bad about them on a stock full choke barrel so I’ll pattern them at 13,25,&45 yards is that efficient enough I’m hunting in a decent clearing but it’s also got some thick woods also.

I have turkey guns that have potential to kill past 40 yards but almost never shoot beyond 35. There will be tons of opinions here but the majority will say 40 and in for turkeys. Pattern for 20, 30, and 40 and if you get 8-10 pellets in the kill zone at 40 you will be golden!

I would shoot 40 first. If 40 gives you a ok pattern, then shoot 25.

If your 40 is outstanding, then shoot one at 50 to see how bad it disintegrates
