Opening up a choke
Choke I recently got from sumtoy is choking the tss to much. Think it's a .520 like to open it up to a xf! What's steps need to take to take few off to open it some. Is that done with a lathe? Or would I be better off just sell it and buy something else?
Re: Opening up a choke
try a load without buffer.

If your machining skills are anything like mine, sell it and buy another choke.

Opening up a choke
Oh I wouldn't do it haha I'd have someone else. May be my best bet tho to sell it.guesswho wrote:If your machining skills are anything like mine, sell it and buy another choke.

Trulock Beretta 28ga chokes show .519 for a extra full, and .532 for a full. You might get a good gunsmith to open it up a few thousands.killerstump wrote:Choke I recently got from sumtoy is choking the tss to much. Think it's a .520 like to open it up to a xf! Sumtoy won't swap you another choke for it? He's always been good about that. I'd call him. Maybe he can open it up for you.

With his experience with SumToy on that gun, I don't think he wants him to touch it again.870 Shooter wrote:Sumtoy won't swap you another choke for it? He's always been good about that. I'd call him. Maybe he can open it up for you.

Re: Opening up a choke
most chokes are heat treated and harder than a wedding night pecker. You could try a hone to remove a few thousands.

Re: Opening up a choke
If it has the straight rifling I wouldn't put a hone in it.

Your correct John, I forgot that his chokes have the slits in it

You shouldn't have a problem selling it. I'd start over.

Sell it and buy another in my opinion.
Re: Opening up a choke
For the hard-headed or hard of hearing. Try unbuffered load before jettisoning choke. It made a difference in my choke. If that doesn't work then get another. Eliminating buffer is one exception to the don't vary recipe proscription. Gii

Re: Opening up a choke
Sound like with it being heat treated I would be best to move the choke to someone else and call briley instead of trying to open it up.

Re: Opening up a choke
Gil, does the elimination of buffer always open the pattern? Or can it work in reverse? I have played around with amounts of buffer but not enough to reach a conclusion. This is very interesting though.GLS wrote:For the hard-headed or hard of hearing. Try unbuffered load before jettisoning choke. It made a difference in my choke. Re: Opening up a choke
My experience is on two chokes and two guns. On one gun, a .410 , buffer made no difference. On the other gun, a 20, eliminating the buffer opened up the pattern by 25%. Both with TSS loads. It's not predictable, but certainly worth trying before buying another choke. This assumes shooting TSS. Gil

Oh, by the way, is this where I say you don't need this high dollar chokes. A Trulock 585 or so is the ticket.
