You gents have a couple beautiful guns, be sure to keep us updated!
Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
I received my #9TSS shot yesterday. I got out to the range today to try it out. Please remember that this is a 20 gauge flintlock fowler with no choke, and I was looking to get the pattern filled in, not shoot farther. Most of my turkeys have been taken in the 25-30 yard range. Range is a measured 40 yards, canning jar lids were used for penetration test. (I had 100% penetration)
Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
With the limitations you choose, gauge, cylinder bore and flintlock, it is impressive. Main question is: What do you think about it? Gil
Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
I love the TSS! It gives me almost a many hits in the 30" at 40 yards as the HW7 started with. 301 hits with TSS vs 330 in the 1 1/2oz load of HW7 I was using.
Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
Good timing!.....I'm still tweaking mine but looks very promising.........
Here is what I'm consistently getting: 240ish +/- hits in 10" at 30yds with 1 5/8oz of TSS #9 (I yanked the one in the picture a bit! )
(170ish at 40 in 10")
I have one with a 20" count at 30yds at home and it's something like 430 total in 20" at that range.
I want to keep tweaking because I think I can do better but without a trap it's just too expensive! LOL
This will do for now unless I get spunky this weekend, and gives me an honest 40yd yd flintlock.
100grs Goex 3Fg , a thin overshot card to protect the powder, (3) 1/8" lubed Wool wads, 1 5/8oz TSS #9, 15gs of PSB buffer, an 2 thin overshot cards.....no shot cup.

Looks great Matt!

Now all we need to do is be able to see the sights!Rocklock wrote:Looks great Matt!
I might still mess with mine......I think there is still some room for improvement. I was even considering trying 9.5s if I can find some this late in the game.

My thought as well.Johndoe wrote:Wait. No shot cup? TSS on bare bore. Don't think I'd do that?

Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
The smoke keeps rolling! PA bird #2 for the flintlock.
10.5" beard, 20.2lbs, 1" spurs.
The 30yd shot flattened him and he probably had 40-50 holes in his head and neck.
The TSS is rocking them!

Looks like fun!

Congrats to you as well!Rocklock wrote:Congrats Matt!
I had some concerns about it myself initially, but the shot is so small round and smooth that it seems to flow very well. I can see some light streaking through the choked section of the bore but nothing I can "feel". A couple passes with some green scotchbrite and its gone. I don't think these tiny pellets have the 'Bite" that a skidding Hevishot #6 or something might have, and I might even switch to #9.5s for next season.Johndoe wrote:Wait. No shot cup? If I was shooting round after round through it I'd maybe be concerned but for the 1 or 2 shots I will take each season It's really no biggie.
I do still plan to try to figure out a load using CDS wads which should eliminate it altogether.
I can tell you the TSS #9's absolutely rock them out of the flinter. I forgot to really look at the first bird which was a closer shot but the 2nd bird I shot at 28-30yds had somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 hits from the wattles to his noggin.
Even if I can't get plastic shotcups to work the trade off is added pattern density and effectiveness vs a little bit of bore wear is worth it to me.

Re: Flintlock fowler with TSS for turkeys
Couple years ago I bought a 20 gauge flintlock fusil that I was told made by Greg Christian. I've been apprehensive about using it on turkeys, it is cylinder bore. I need to work on load development with it. I've shot .60 cal round balls with 70 gn FFFg Goex and it has a wallop. Accuracy is meh.
