Royal Slam by Doug Updike aka Gobbler

Post by Gobbler »

Here is my one and only Royal slam. It took multiple years and I decided to mount each Gobbler on a limb.
Osceola- Was killed 7 miles from my old house in East Orange county Florida. I killed it in 04. It was such a beautiful bird I decided to get it mounted.
Rio- Was killed in Uvalde Texas in 09 on the Harris Ranch. We were on our way to Mexico to hunt Gould's and met there for a two day stay before flying down.
Gould- Was killed in 09 also. A group of us including Scott Bashore (call maker) flew from San Antonio and ended up in Durango Mexico. We drove to a ranch in the Sierra Madres. It was self guided and a riot. Everyone killed one.
Merriam - Was killed in Nebraska in 2011 on a hunt I went on with TS and Gobblerstopper.
Eastern - Was killed in 2011 in Illinois 5th season Schuylar county.

From left to right: Merriam, Rio, Eastern, Gould above Osceola.

The slam rule for mounting is as follows.."The bird must be mounted in the exact pose and location, (i.e. the ground, tree limb, etc.) it was in when you fired the shot." As per Article 12, Sec. 13 of the Official Handbook for Mounting Slam Birds.

Maybe a ''can'' ceiling light would hit 'em all..
Just kidding, of course. That is a neat set of mounts, and I am envious as Hell. Well done, my friend..

That is sweet! Ricky said you killed a royal jake slam?

Those goulds are beautiful. I saw one mounted hanging from it's feet. The white was jaw dropping. I want one. Cool display.

Tom, I am sorry to say they have to Gobble or actually look like a Turkey for me to want to hunt it. I probably won't.
I don't have anything negative to say about folks that want to kill the Oscellated but its not for me. I love cool cold mornings on US soil when I Turkey hunt.

Actually I would like to go back to Mexico again and kill some more Goulds.

Haaahaaa! Even though I am an NWTF supporter, their touting of the Ocellated turkey as somehow being important in the turkey hunting world is a joke. Yes, they are really pretty little birds with outlandishly long spurs, but anybody that would pay several thousand dollars to go down to Yucatan to shoot one has got more money than sense...(Oops,...sorry if any of you have actually done that,...what I meant to say is "anybody, except for the members on here".... :D
If an Ocellated "turkey" is related to our wild turkeys, then peacocks must be also. They are just as pretty, if not moreso, and I can go shoot one of them out of some farmers barnyard tree in the dark for a hell of a lot less money!

Yeah and also the fact that the bulk of their hunting is roost shooting.. Although they have been learning ways to call them as of late.

I will most likely never hunt them, that is a long drive considering I wont fly..

I am dieing to hunt the Goulds..

I was thinking about it until the most recent US travel warning. I guess I will not go back until Mexico is safe. Which may be never as long as the US demands the use of so many drugs. The US is the reason there is a drug cartel in Mexico. I guess I live in the minority because I don't use or know people that use or buy drugs. Actually I probably know people I just don't know it.
Either way it is horrible the death and violence caused in Mexico over drug money.

I like them Doug. I've killed a Royal slam. I still have all of them except my Goulds. A labrador puppy can do severe damage to a strutting Goulds turkey. All I have left is a tail fan. The others are still full mounted. I also had a GS in all full capes. It was pretty cool. They are also all tore up. I now have a GS of tail fans.
