My boy's first gobbler... father/son double!

Post by gobblegobblegobble »

So proud of my 9 year old son!

He's been going out with me every day this season on mentored hunts. Getting up at 4:30am, hiking a half mile up and down steep hills to get to our blinds and having some close encounters that just didn't pan out.

My brother, who already bagged a 21 pounder Saturday with a bow, found a bunch of responsive ones yesterday morning. We decided to hunt them today... hiked in, located them, set up our blind and started calling.

As luck would have it, two nice jakes came in together. We had it planned for him to shoot the one on the right and me the one on the left. He couldn't get the gun in position right away, I thought they were going to take off but he did finally drop his like a sack of potatoes at 10 yards with his Mossberg 20 gauge. My bird took off running and putting, but my brother was able to stop him with some clucking, and I dropped him about 35 yards away with my Remington 870 Super Mag.

Father-son double, two birds down by 6:30am! It was his first turkey, and when I turned to him he was crying. I asked him if the shotgun kicked too hard or hit him in the face (he practiced with light field loads and I swapped them out with 3" magnums) and he said no, he didn't feel it, he's crying because he's so happy! He worked so hard for this bird and I just can't get over it!

My brother is a field staffer for Wired Outdoors, and it was all caught on film for their show and will be available for viewing on their website or on their Roku channel. I'll update when the footage is available.

His smile and your grin say it all. Congrats. Hey, in the first photo your son resembles a young Ron Howard aka Opie.
