tagged out in illinois. First three turkeys with 20ga TSS

Post by pedro »

yesterday was my sons third birthday party, so with the family tired and sleeping i decided to go hunting. went to a small piece of private land amongst many other small tracts of land that border a large field, soybeans will be planted so right know it has just been cultivated and ready for planting. the field edge is where the turkeys roost. my plan is to slip through the pines until they end and listen. this pine grove is isolated from the roost area. i settle in between two white pines one hour before shooting time. all is quiet and i start to think that they roosted further down out of reach, then a crow buzzes the tower and gobble! this bird was literally 25 yards away right above me. i am very well hidden because of the evergreen, which is the only green that is here and it is already past mid season. he is gobbling at everything and on his own, i do not want to call because i am so close and do not want to hang him up, but i cant help it and give some very soft yelps and get no response. WTF? after i called to him he shut up and remained silent. i did not hear any other turkeys around before the silent treatment so i figured he was alone. then i hear wings and he takes off to the field to my east. as soon as he hits the ground he starts gobbling like crazy. i slip just into the edge of a twenty five yard wide tree line that separates us and see him in strut and gobbling 250 yards away. i wait for him to stop for just a moment and yelp, he gobbles and i cut him off with three aggressive cuts, he double gobbles and i go silent. when he hit the field he was facing the way he came and was sounding off right at me. he stops gobbling and breaks strut and slowly makes his way toward the hen he heard. this is thick stuff with not many shooting lanes. he is making his way and when he gets to the first opening at 40 yards i dont shoot because i see too much vegetation in the way. so as he is walking away i spy another better opening, but it will be a far shot. he gets into the opening facing away i yelp, he stop and i little mossberg 20ga loaded with 1 5/8 TSS doped him in his tracks at 62 yards. with knowing my pattern and his vitals exposed i was confident. awesome hunt and what a way to end my illinois season. so now i leave for wisconsin this afternoon and hope to put one to bed for the morning.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

Congrats Pedro, way to make it all come together, and tag out!!
Glad someone got on some turkeys this weekend. I just spent the worst weekend of the season with the crappy weather. Did not hear one dang gobble in three days.

No sleep yet. Went up to Wisconsin on Monday on my wife's uncles farm and started my quest for a bird with my .410.
