2019 Wild Turkey Season

I started my season in South Carolina. I hunted a SC WMA Land for a couple days with no luck. I hunted with a friend from work on his farm. We had one gobbling on the roost but he went the other way after he flew down. Rain came in so we went to breakfast. After the rain stopped we went running and gunning with no luck. We went back to the house to rest. When the sun came out we heard a Gobbler sound off in a food plot. We went near the fields edge. We could see the Gobbler strutting about 80 yards out. Him and his buddy was coming to us. But four hens came into the field and took the Gobblers the other way. We did not get on any other turkeys that day. With my buddies work and guard duty we did not get to hunt anymore together.
So the next Saturday I decided to hunt in North Carolina. The season had been in about a week. I was hunting another buddies land. He works for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He could not hunt but he told me to go.
Unfortunately the weather was not ideal for turkey hunting it was cold and windy. But I did hear one gobble early. But he was off the property I was hunting. I ended heading home due to the high wind and drizzle.
Midweek I got a call from my buddy that works for the NCWRC. He told me about a Gobbler he saw strutting in a field he was going to spray for a warm season food plot on the game lands. The Gobbler was in a L shaped field that we had hunted before. We planned on hunting the Gobbler on Saturday. But he had family plans and could not hunt. He told me to go.
I got to the game lands that Saturday morning early. I had a long walk into the area where the L shaped field. I got to the field and setup. As soon as I sat down in my Gobbler chair the TOM gobbled about 200 yards in front of me. He was roosted on the side of the mountain back toward the way I had came to the field. He gobbled good on the roost. He flew down and gobbled at my calls. But he sounded like he was going away from me or it was just muffled from the leaves on the trees. I called on a glass call. It sounded like he had turned him toward me. Next time I called he was at the top of the hill in the L shaped field. After A few minutes I called again but he did not gobble. A few hens came into view in the field to my left. It was four hens. I then heard the Gobbler strutting just out of site.
The hens were running around chasing each other. I thought the Gobbler was going to show. But the hens went into the woods to my hard left. I could not hear the drumming anymore. A few minutes later I hear what sounds like two gobblers gobbled where the hens had went too my left. I thought about going to them. But before I got up I edged up on my chair to look up the hill. When I did there was a full fan Gobbler strutting on top of the hill. I sat back down and called on the glass call and a mouth caller. He gobbled. I waited a few minutes and called again. He gobbled about half way to me. I sat the call down and got ready. I saw just his red and blue head just over the rise of the field. He must have went into strutt cause his head went back down. I moved my gun just ahead of the direction he was going. The next time he put is head up I took the shot. I got up and went to him. He was 30 paces from the gun.
He was a pretty longbeard with nice spurs.
I did not get to hunt anymore this year. But I was blessed with five good days in the woods.
Here are a few pictures of the turkey and the L shaped field where I got this pretty Gobbler.
Hope you enjoy the story and the pictures.
