I could stand on my porch of a camp I was in at one time and here one side of the place I liked to hunt.

Well a bird started up as it was getting light and I took off no light could barely see the four wheeler trail.

At one point the property made a sharp turn at the corner and there was a fence you could reach out and touch it was so narrow there.

The people that had that land, had a mule and he was in the corner next to the fence. All I know as I made that turn I must have startled him...

He bayed within inches of the side of my head in the dark. EEEEEEHHHHHHAAAAAAWWWW.

IT HAD ME THE BOOGER MONSTER HAD ME.

Next thing I know I am setting in the road screaming like a little girl with hot mule snot dripping of my hat/head and something wet and warm running down my leg, dang thing took 10 years off my life...

That is so familiar!! Used to lease a property that bordered a mule skinner as they are called in the Ozarks. A gentleman who bred really good mules, raised and trained them for trail riding in the steep mountains. He had a prized jack for breeding stock that could bray as well as any specimen ever to live. This was all unknown to us the first Fall we camped to hunt there. We heard him braying the first evening from camp which was well over a mile from the jack's pen. To my surprise and near heart attack his pen was less than 50 yards from the stand I was sitting in just before shooting light the next morning when he brayed the first time. A SHOCK does not describe it nearly well enough! Crazy enough I believe he was braying at a buck crossing his pasture. A few minutes later a buck came from that direction and fed down my shooting lane and I shot him at 15 steps.

Over the next several years we had a lot of fun taking other family members and putting them on that stand and forgetting to tell them the jack would blow them off the stand!

Similar situation happened to my kids this year on the youth hunt. I knew the donkey was close by but failed to tell my daughter(6) and son(3). So we take off down the road and all 3 of us are carrying stuff when he belts it out and stuff goes flying everywhere and I got 2 kids wrapped around my legs!! After laughing I almsot felt bad for not warning them, almost!

I guess I'll throw in my donkey story. Close enough to the same critter.

One property I hunt has horses, cattle and a few donkeys sharing one huge pasture. One day, late morning, I was crossing that pasture when the overly friendly donkey ran up and stood in front of me. He looked to mean no harm so I reached out and scrubbed his forehead, which was apparently what he wanted. He then followed me to the fence line and hee hawed at me all the way back to my truck.
Now jump foreword a couple days. I had a favorite listening spot at the high point of that pasture near some pines. Even though it was raining hard and windy, I headed there in the darkness. When I got to the top of the hill, I just stood there with my back to the rain and cursing myself for being too early.
Maybe 10 minutes of wind, rain and darkness had passed when something shoved me ahead a couple of feet. To my surprise, I didn't let the noises come out that were going on in my head. I just turned very slowly, expecting to see something that might have got me on the next episode of Finding Bigfoot. Instead and thankfully, there was a big ol set of ears with a donkey under them...whew!!
After getting my bodily functions under control, I kinda enjoyed his company until I headed off after a bird.

Some of the land I used to hunt had a huge Hereford bull that seemed to delight in waiting til you were on top of him then bellowing the way they do- scared the daylights out of me! But that big rascal could rip a gobble out of a nearby bird if the mood was right. 🤔Maybe I should make a locator call and I’ll name it “ the Big Red Machine”!😂
