Opening morning of Va season. 4-11-15

Post by skinner712 »

Opening day of the Va season started 4-11-15. I had a buddy from work show me some land I could hunt the day before. He has had good luck there in the past. So opening morning I get there about 4:30. Around 5 I leave the truck and head to the top of the mountain. Just at day light the wend picks up. It would blow very hard thin stop thin go again. I could not hear a gobbler for nothing. Around 7:30 I get up and move around a ridge a little ways. Just thin I heard a gobbler about 600 yards away. I hit the box call and he gobbles again. I moved about a 100 yards and set up. I hit the box again and he sounds off. I look up the mountain and there he comes over the top. He never stopped he just came right on down to about 80 yards from me. I make one more little call as he is in some brush. He gobbles and blows up. Walks about 10 yards in full strut. Thin gobbles again and starts moving to me. At 15 yards I pulled the trigger and my opening morning hunt is over. I first heard him at 7:40 and killed him at 7:45. He was only a 2 year old but I was very happy with a great first morning. And not killing a gobbler last season in Va or Wv made it that much more great.

Great Job! I can definitely feel your pain on that wind. It was crazy! What part of VA were you hunting?
