Day 24 of the 2019 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

As I was walking back to my spot, a PIA ran up a tree next to my deer blind.
So I hoped that was a good sign.

It was 75 at 12:42 with a breeze & sunny skies. It was a lot cooler in the
woods so I was glad I wore a light jacket.

At 12:45. I saw a fox moving in the area where I usually sit. My 1st thought
was: “NUTZ!!!! Who’s been leaking my plans!!!!” At 12:47, another fox
moved in from the south exactly where I thought they would be carry 2 nuts.
He hopped up on a fallen limb & became #10. My 2nd thought was: “HAH!!!!
This young lad was given bad intel!!!!” Not bad, 7 minutes from sit down to kill.

At 01:00, a red showed up on my right. At 01:26, another fox showed up but
moved away & went under a dead fall with no shot. At 02:03, a fox showed up
on top of the dead fall, probably the same 1, & he became #11.

At 02:15,I spotted 1 to my left & was able to follow it in the scope until it stopped
under the fallen limb. He joined his brother in squirrel heaven from almost exactly
the same spot as the 1st. I decided that, if I got #4 or my watched said 03:00, I was
headed in. No need to get greedy.

At 02:35, another fox showed up & headed to my usual spot. It stayed in the under
growth so, no shot. I watched for a couple of minutes &when I looked to my right,
there was a fox, sitting up with its hands crossed across its chest staring at me from
10’. I went into instant freeze mode moving only my eyes. We started at each other
for a few minutes when it moved closer & closer. It finally started up a tree so close
that I could reach out & touch it. It finally disappeared in the tree tops.

Today proves that, if you pay attention to your surrounding & note what the critters
do, in essence, I patterned the squirrels, good results can happen. Today was my 1st
triple of the year & I put a hurting on the good old boys club. If I would have sat in
my old tried & true spot, I would have become very frustrated watching the bushies.

I left at 03:00 with the temp all the way down to 73. I plan to hit “my” primary
turkey woods tomorrow.

The last bushy I shot had, to me, a rather unique tail. It seemed to be ringed
like a raccoon rather than normal. Has anyone else seen something this a squirrel?
