Day 11 of the 2019 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

Primary Turkey Woods

As I was setting up in “my” primary turkey woods at 07:43, sunny, calm, & 58,
I saw a fox on a large dead fall. I took a rest on a sapling but it never stopped
long enough for a shot before dropping to the ground. I watched for about 10
minutes but never saw it again.

At08:05, the breeze picked up & it got a little chilly so I was glad I had brought
a light jacket. At 09:13, a coyote trotted west along the outside edge of the
woods & at 09:35, a coon went through the woods in front of me heading north.
At 09:52, a red-tailed hawk landed in a tree on the edge in front of me. A few
minutes later, it dove to the ground. I didn’t see anything in its talons when it
took off but it may have gotten a mouse or vole.

At 10:05, I stood up to stretch & “answer a call.” I had just put my left glove
on when a fox ran towards me & stopped at the base of a tree broadside. I was
able to reach down, pick up the .17, & add #5 to the larder, a nice, young male.
I think this may be the same fox as I saw 1st thing as it came from the same
general vicinity. I took the pic (1st) with the same mushrooms as 4 days ago (2nd).
Quite a difference.

At 10:23, the red-tail returned & landed in a tree behind me. I headed in at 11:00
with the temp at 84. I stopped & weedeated the drive lane into the field where I
plan to hunt “my” 2ndy turkey woods this afternoon for the 1st time.

Secondary Turkey Woods

I was set-up at 01:47 with a strong wind, sunny, & 84. There are a lot more trees
down & the undergrowth is really thick. I’d be lucky to even see a squirrel on the
ground let alone shoot one!

At 03:00, I took a walk through the woods. This woods has3 different types of
hickories, bitternut, shellbark, & shagbark, usually in abundance. I found no nuts
at all on the ground & the trees looked barren. Not a good sign. I sat back down
at 03:30 & called it a dat at04:30, still windy with a temp of 91. The wind was
the only thing that kept it from being really hot in the woods.
