Day 38 of the 2018 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

After lunch today, I decided a nap & I couldn’t think of a better place in the woods. It was 85, sunny, breezy, & cooler in the woods at 01:15. I nodded off within almost immediately for about a 15 minute power nap.

At 01:42, I spotted a fox moving from my left to my right. I got the x-hairs on it & it turned moving back to my left. It stopped, the .17 popped, & he rolled over on his back. It looks like the .17, went in his mouth, shattered the skill & top of the spin, & jellied the heart & lungs.

At 03:10, I stood up, turned around, & saw another fox go up a tree into the tops & disappear. I went to the pond. I got back to my spot at 03:50 after seeing nothing at the pond.

I had already decided to head in at 05:00 or if I got a 2nd bushy. So, when #2 showed up about 2’ from where the male went down, I ended the hunt at 04:12. My time couldn’t have been much better. After putting the 4-wheeler away & moving everything back into the truck, it started raining as soon as I started cleaning them.

The 1st thing I noticed when I pulled the 4-wheeler into my parking spot was that the tree had been cut up clearing the trail. When I walked back to the pond, all the trees that were across the trail had also been cleared from the trail, even the 1 with poison ivy from top to bottom. The odd thing is that whoever did the cutting also cut a dead tree off about 6’ up & left lying across the trail. No biggie as it is easy to step across or around.

nice story George. I wish I took the time to document hunts or pay as close attention to detail as you do. I think I worry too muck about the next one and think little of the last.

Thx. I basically do it so I have the memories to read when the time comes where I can't get out any longer.

Those naps in the woods are the most refreshing; more meat for the pot is a bonus.

George.. You’re going to grow red tail with all that squirrel that you eat.
BTW...Nice, stinkin’ shooting!!
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Thx. I don't really eat that much. Prolly 10 years ago, I took a few squirrel meals
to Gobbler's Roost in NY for the fall season (chowder was a huge hit with Ron's boss,
Ms.. Kathy) & it kind of grew from there. I take 2-4 squirrel dishes up in the spring
& fall as well as 2 whole foxes so Ron can make Squirrel Fricassee for Ms. Kathy. I
also take turkey & venison meals sometimes.

I'm pretty happy with my shot selection this year. For whatever reason, I always
seem to get a few "bad" hits that ruins a lot of meat. Out of 19 this year, I have had
2 neck shots that tore up the front quarters & 1 shoulder shot that tore up 1 leg
& shoulder. That's the problem with shooting Hornady's .17 Ballistic tips, they
literally explode on contact & destroy a lot of meat. The rest have all been head shots.

Do you use shooting sticks or just lean on the tree? I’m assuming that they’re not all freehand shots. Impressed as Hell if they are!!

I am seated for most of the shots but have used a tree. Only a couple freehand. The .17 Savage has a bull barrel & it is a little hard to shot free.

Thx.

Hunter, what method do you use to clean you squirrels? Love them in a pie or stew, but they are a pain to clean. Thanks, Wayne.
