I didn’t get my nap yesterday so I slept in until 07:30. I got back to the woods behind my house at 08:30 with the temp at 68, breezy, & sunny with a few clouds. At 09:05, I saw a fox moving along the ground to my left. It moved towards me, went behind a tree & disappeared. At 09:10, a fox jumped up on the log in front of me with a hickory nut in its mouth. The .17 added number 4 to the pot. The red spot on the shoulder is where a fragment of the .17 came out. The shot went into the neck under his head. I suppose it could have been the 1st bushy I saw but it would have had to been Houdini to cover the 30 yards or so from where I saw it to where I shot it as well as finding a nut. The 30 yards is fairly clear, especially the 10 yards of 4-wheeler trail but I never saw the 1st squirrel again.
At 10:00, I walked back to the pond to see what might be shaking the tree tops. At 10:10, a fox started chirring to my right. The trees are pretty thick & I couldn’t see it. At 10:20, it barked a little closer to me &, at 10:25, it started scolding right off the trail. I finally saw it & followed it through the woods for about 20 minutes. I would catch glimpses of it but never enough for a shot. I finally acknowledge defeat but we will do battle on another day!!
I sat back down at 11:00 & walked to the edge of the woods & back at 11:15. I looked for the hickory nut the 1 I got was carrying but couldn’t find it. What I did find was fresh cuttings on the log & behind it right. In the hour or so that I was at the pond, another bushy came in, started cutting on the nut, & took off with it before I got back. Just goes to prove that walks aren’t always productive! Luck, LUCKY squirrel.
It was getting pretty hot, 84, so I headed in at 12:15. Plan on going out again tomorrow morning to another woods.

Thx. It's hell when you miss that daily nap or 2 or 3.
