Number 4

Post by HunterGKS »

I haven’t seen a groundhog until last Friday afternoon when I started playing hide-n-seek with 1.
I was going out to the barn & turned the corner of the new building & saw 1 running down the
concrete pad away from me. I had stacked some sheet metal, t-posts, & other odds & ends
along the north edge of the building & it ran under it. The next day, I noticed that a lot of
gravel had been dug out from under the building so started watching for the pasture piggy.
I did spot it twice in the ditch but it disappeared before I could do anything.

Saturday afternoon, I was walking down the ramp from my deck & the g-hog ran from the
evergreens under the deck. Late that afternoon, it was in the ditch again.

I saw it several time Sunday & Monday in the ditch but it was always too quick for me.
Then, at 07:00, I looked out a window & there it was. I was able to get outside onto
the deck & the .223 did its job. The g-hog did the usual tail flagging so I knew it was
down. I put on a pair of shoes & went to get it but it was gone leaving no blood trail.
I looked for several minutes before finding it in the ditch. I don’t know how it managed
to get the 10’ or so into the ditch as its whole left shoulder & neck was blown out.
Pics would have been too gory to post.

I have been averaging 13 groundhogs a year since I moved here but this is only number 4.
I think the coyotes may have been thinning them.
