Owl calls
How hard is an owl call to use thinking of getting a nice 1
Re: Owl calls
I use a Harrison from Hooks. Joe Slaton (Mother Lode Calls) has been making some nice sounding calls also that ive listened to on FB.
They aren't difficult but they do take learning some technique. It's all air volume control and learning to create a sound chamber with your hands. It just takes some practice.
Some of what I hear on YouTube hunts, even commercial video hunts, sounds awful even with good calls. But.....they still elicit a gobble. My brother practically yells out an owl hoot that is almost laughable, but He's the one laughing when birds that I couldn't get going with a call respond to his "owl hoot".

Re: Owl calls
I have the Harrison hoot stick. It is a great owl hooter. A good friend of mine has both the Houndstooth and Harrison hoot stick and he likes the Houndstooth a little better.
You can't go wrong with either one in my opinion. Hobbes is right about air volume and making a good sound chamber.
Check out YouTube and check out the James Harrison instructional video.
Good luck.

I've got hooks and houndstooth..I carry my houndstooth.
With that being said if I didn't have a houndstooth I'd carry with my Harrison.
I've got confidence in both.Just play my houndstooth a little better.
I would like to try one from Slaton.
Out of the 3 buy one practice you'll be fine it's not hard!!!!

Re: Owl calls
save some weight and learn to hoot with your voice. as already stated, you don't have to be great at it for it to work. ive hollered gobble you dirty sob at them before and guess what... it worked.

Re: Owl calls
A while back, I had a hooter made to look like a shotgun shell, except a little bigger. I lost it in the woods and can't remember who made it or where it came from, but I liked it. I've carried a Harrison for several years, I like it very much.
Anybody know of one that looks like a shotshell??

The small one Mr. Gibson has started making is pretty awesome little call. I would not say it is the greatest I ever heard but it sounds mighty fine, and it will fit in a shirt pocket.

Where from? He was selling them for $25 at the show and midwest is the only other place I have seen them and they were $28 plus shipping.MKW wrote:I just went try to buy one of the Gibson owl calls...nope.

Oh, I see. Yeah, wrong Gibson. Just saw the one you were talking about on Midwest, I think. If you were talking about that open-reed call, I have no use for that. I'd tear that thing up first time out.

I have the harrison and the primos hoot flute. Harrison sounds more realistic but hoot flute is louder and higher pitched. The hoot flute seems to get more gobbles so I carry it.
