Range Finders

Post by coytclr »

Since I did not see anything on them, here's the question.

Do you use them for turkey hunting?

If so what make(s) do you suggest?

Thank you ahead of time for your input.

I do carry one occasionally (Leupold) on ground I'm not familiar with, but on my home turf, never.

I have a Nikon that I have had for 8-10 yrs. Just replaced the battery for the first time. Use it for deer and turkeys.

I have a Leupold I use for deer and turkey hunting. It's probably 8-10 years old. I would not recommend the one I have. Too many settings, etc., and target acquisition kinda sucks. I know there are a bunch out there now, just do your research and read the reviews.

Good Luck,

Range Finders

Post by turkey_slayer »

I went with a Leica 1000r after my Nikons crashed. I despise carrying binoculars so I figured I would get a rangefinder with good glass to use as a monocular. So far I haven't been disappointed

Nikon, use it when I'm bored, helps keep my range estimation sharp.

If its just for turkey you can get buy with any of them. If you are going to use for deer hunting as well it would depend on how far you plan to shoot. After 300 yards most of the range finders do not range deer very well. Bushnell 1 mile arc or tactical elite for the money is excellent and hard to beat, The Leica 1600 is excellent, and the Zeiss is pretty good but takes too long to acquire exact range.

I've had a Nikon for 10+ years. I don't use one for turkeys, mostly just deer, primarily archery. I don't know much about em, but the Nikon does fine for my purposes.

I'm asking on range finders, because of using TSS shot, and if hunting open fields, I have found fields to be the hardest to judge distance.

I would be using for turkey & archery hunting.

Range Finders

Any should work then. Of the Nikons and Bushnells I had they were all accurate when I measured them against a tape measurer at 60 yards

I usually carry a Nikon rangefinder during turkey season. Still can't figure out why.
If I were to buy a new one with archery in mind, I'd make sure you can see the readout in low light and get one that is trajectory compensating.

I always carry an inexpensive Bushnell Scout when deer or turkey hunting. Works great for turkeys and archery deer, not so hot for rifle hunting. Optics are fair at best but work fine inside 100 yds. Won't range a deer much past 150, but I can usually range a tall tree near what I am looking at out to 300-350.

I agree with you. In a field situation, it is impossible for me to judge the difference between 60 and 70 yds.

I carry and use a Redfield Raider 550 for turkey and photography. LIghtweight decent battery life and accurate as we tested it on a metered rifle range and against other name brand expensive devices. Since loosing most vision in my right eye depth perception is difficult so if in a blind I set one decoy at 35 yards and then pick out objects near by so I know the turkey is going down and not wounded. I have also ranged many deer with it and it would work fine if I was hunting them!

Again want to thank all who gave input.

I thought more would use them for turkeys. Little surprised that most don't. Figured with shooting TSS, and can reach out, more would use them.

I use a 100 ft tape. If I strike a bird I pick my tree and measure in four or five places giving me 33 yards. I picked up the tape for about five dollars and does the same thing as those expensive range finders.
