Modern Decoys

Post by Gobbler »

I have mentioned this before. But don't you think these totally realistic decoys can entice birds with out calling if set up correctly in an area?

They sure can ! I once watched 3 longbeards trot across a 300 yard open field right to my decoys.

Without a doubt, thats one reason I don't use deke's of any sort. Lots of folks use them and thats fine by me, but I don't want to feel cheated in my hunts and thats exactly what a deke makes me feel like.

Just watched a bow hunt with two folks that never called and the Gobblers came a long way once they saw the decoys. Killed the first one then another came in and they killed him also. Impressive yet not my style. It was in Nebraska farm country so I guess you do what you have to... to hunt them in that terrain. No trees or cover close by.

If your calling is sh#zz then I guess the no calling method would be a good gameplan!

I remember someone selling a turkey body suit...

I heard they didn't do well. the pro staffers never got back with them on how good it worked out.

I seen them in Nashville @ the convention. Gobbler bought 2 of them ! I think that's what really happned to his eye. We were sword fighting at the Fiddlers Inn with them & I accidently poked him in the eye. Sorry Doug ! :struttin:

Of course they can....that's why so many people kill turkeys that never would've stood a chance, otherwise! :D

True story: I don't use them when I hunt, but I do put out some Dave Smith's when I'm guiding, because they absolutely look alive!! Despite my strong preference to only hunt without decoys, I wanted to see how well they worked in a field during a rainly day, so I used a set in Delaware last spring. Had a jake come in (although, I'm sure it was to my melodious calling, and not the fakes ;) ) and start breeding one of my two hen decoys. Two more jakes then ran in and started trying to gang-rape the second one, but they knocked her over onto her side, just as two toms raced up and started chasing the "hoodlams" away. The original jake never stopped treading his new girlfriend...even when I proceeded to miss one of the toms! None of the turkeys panicked at the shot. In fact, the toms just walked off gobbling; still following the jakes. However, "Romeo" the jake was at a rather crucial time in his love-making routine, so he kept at it. Finally, he finished his business and left, and from my blind 20 yards away, I could visually see something white on my hen's back. After all the turkeys had vacated the field, I went out to inspect my decoy, and yes, the white stuff was jake-jism....that silly teenage "gang'sta" had deflowered my innocent little hen deke!

When a pair of CO's checked me back at the van, I told 'em I hoped they had a rape kit with 'em, and that I wanted to file charges against the jake who had brutalized my hen.

Modern decoys are a tool that totally change the nature of the quarry we are after. Takes away their eyes and ears and turns them into something different.
