Same as morning. Locate a gobbler verbally or visually then proceed to dislodge his brain matter.

Illinois shuts it off at 1 PM. Then it's mushrooms and bluegills for the rest of the day.

Geez,....I hate to have to agree with Guess-"I love the NWTF"-Who again, and especially not twice in the same day, ...but my approach is much the same as his. ...Hunt 'em by sight and/or sound, call their arses in, and then jelly their punkin' heads!....(Okay, so it's usually not quite that simple,.... but it sounds good!) :toothy7:

I hate it just as bad. Makes me wonder if I really know what I'm talking about or if I'm just a crazy ole coot.

I've got one area I've hunted that last couple years that are a hot mid-day/afternoon gobbler hang-out. I've hunted there 4 times, with 4 dead gobblers coming to the call to show for it. I recommend finding a place like that to spend some time in the afternoon.

I generally go back to a spot where I've seen or heard a gobbler that morning, and try to find him all lonesome and such and try to befriend him.

Here too you strike a bird between 2 and 4 and he gobbles twice you most likely will kill him.. I wish we had our 4 pm close still.. Our birds are highly predictable in the evening and it may be the easiest time to kill one.

True but I still like the option of an afternoon hunt. In Ontario it ends at 7 pm so you can't just sit at the roost and wait for them.

I do well running and gunning in the afternoon. Usually have the place to myself. if you get a response, odds are in you favor.

i really miss hunting in the afternoons. being from iowa i put a pounding on lunch time gobblers and even right before roost. birds act strange around lunch time but i find it more challenging when they are settled down on a quite afternoon poontang prowl. once you get em fired up its game on regardless what time of day it is. its easier to complete a mission with more time on your hands when you have to work 5 days a week. down here in florida, if the gobbler "DECIDES" to fly down at 10am, you only have 2 hours to chase em down....that sucks. And yes, i have had a bird sit in the tree till 10 am down here.

Any idea why the turkeys are hanging out in this area...food, dustings, water?

No doubt in my mind I have the crazy part down and mother nature is taking of the old coot part (TRUE). I like the afternoon hunt even if it is just patterning the birds (like we do with loads and chokes) so I know where I want to be the next morning.

I wish Indiana still stopped at noon. Since they made it all day hunting, I've probably only hunted in the afternoon two or three times. Don't really have a strategy.

Turkey's are creatures of habbit, if you have a fly down area or stut zone , try that same area in late afternoon. A lot of time, if not spook he will be in that same area getting ready to put his hens to bed. In Florida we can hunt all day. Afternoon hunt can be alot of fun (if it is not to hot).

Can hunt all day here; I like to find a likely area and hang out calling sporadically. Mainly just listening and looking. If I'm near a field I may see one to roost for tomorrow. As season progresses and gobblers get lonely I may become a bit more mobile in my search as you can bet he is. I agree, a gobble in the pm is solid gold and "should" be one step closer to a ride in your truck asap!

I’ve had more birds come in silent in the afternoon than I have in mornings. As long as I hear them before they get too close, it often works out. One afternoon, I had 3 long beards come in on me silent. They came in really quick, but were straight behind me and I screwed it up trying to look when I finally heard their feet in the leaves.

Im glad they have all day hunting. I love to take my family hunting.. sometimes the only chance they get is in the afternoons

being mostly fields with small woodlots here in northern Indiana, we scout and glass for prospective strutters and make a game plan if needed

Here in Ga we can hunt all day, and I hunt about the same way as in the morning. I like to move into a area where toms hang out sit,and call for 30 Min. to an hour. One time me, and my son-in -law chase the 2 gobblers all day long. They would stay out at about 70 to 80 yards for a while, and then walk off. I had give them every call I had in my turkey vest with no luck. With about 15 Mins of legal shooting time left, I remembered my K & H fighting purr call. Got it out, and he had one killed in about 2 Mins. Late in the season with all the leaves out it was dark enough to see fire fly from his barrel!!!

Call, hike, glass, call, hike, glass, call, call, glass, call, hike, call..........until a bird responds. Sometimes the order is changed up a bit and at one area it's drive instead of hike unless I'm hunting it on my own and not with a particular buddy that isn't into the hiking thing. I'll do all of that in an area where I heard birds that morning, if that's the case, or somewhere new. The only thing that changes from the morning is I'm not setting up on birds on the roost. I still prefer morning.

I always seem to prefer morning also. Having started my turkey hunting in a State that only then allowed hunting until noon it got to be a habit. The few times we have hunted where afternoon hunting was legal we did well. My lone FL bird in 2016 was taken around 2pm. A buddies opening day 2014 FL bird was taken also around 2pm. Both came in hard and fast. The hotter the afternoons the less likely we are motivated to hunt. Don't think the birds really care. At times throughout the FL season I will run a few game cameras in a section of private land where we hunt often. A review of the pictures reveals strutters can and do show up anytime. Like deer hunting it can be mentally tough to stay "on stand" all day in the turkey woods but it can pay off.

I know in New Jersey- I believe the last 2 weeks you can hunt till Sundown. I have never hunted past 12 noon yet- but this coming Spring- hunting till around 2pm would be nice. Probably I will just do some loud cutting on a Box and walk around a bit.
