I remember a couple years ago while scouting a piece of property behind a friends house, Harrison and I heard quite a few gobbles in the trees at first light.
Well, these birds pitched down and started heading away from us. Now, I never bring calls with me in pre-season, but I wanted to try somehing I felt was pretty harmless. I reached down and scratched in the leaves, and did nothing more.
These birds were well over 100 yards away when I scratched in the leaves.
Within 10 min a group of 7 or so jakes came to within 3 feet of us. One stood right in front of Harrison, and let a gobble!
I thought he was gonna come right out of his chair! It was hysterical!
It taught me a valuable lesson about there ability to pick up on sounds they find interesting, and just how extrodinary their hearing is. They thought there were some turkeys scratching, and decided to investigate.
I still feel this is the deadliest call in the spring woods.
