When times get tough
Meaning the birds are not gobbling well.. Do you go on the prowl looking for that one that is out there somewhere willing to play, or do you settle in a likely spot?

It depends on how much land I have permission to hunt.

Re: When times get tough
depends
if I can, I will walk till I get one.
if I can't, then I may set a lil while

Re: When times get tough
That is the reason I hold tight, as the land I hunt most does not allow a lot of movement

Same here. The farm I hunt doesn't allow much movement.hoobilly wrote:depends

Re: When times get tough
If there is a spot where I think a bird is likely to happen by, or if I know there is a turkey in the area, I often settle in for an hour+ or until I bored. If I have no leads and one place is likely just as good as another, I usually move around.
I go stubbornly into error by myself, and reach my own fallacious conclusions using my own faulty data. ~Tom Kelly
When times get tough
I will do both, at the same time usually.
Re: When times get tough
Little of both or a lot of one. It all depends on the acreage, topography, amount of time to hunt,& prior scouting intell.
Re: When times get tough
If I've got enough country to hunt, I am going to go find a bird that will gobble to my calling,...or wear myself out trying. Turkey hunting to me is about finding a responsive bird and calling him in. Any other way of killing one is way, way less fulfilling to me.

find a spot where you know they go and go there. Then take a nap.

Re: When times get tough
I have done the camp out thing on a gobbler that I know is using a particular area, but usually go to regular listening spots, until I get on one gobbling.
If I can not get one gobbling, and since I love to exercise and walk for miles.
I will just start walking through the deep woods with a GPS,.. just in case,...lol.
I have proven to myself, and actually said it outloud to myself many times, when things are not going as plannned,... Just hang in there, and keep walking slowly and keep listening in good areas, you know turkeys frequent,... and something will always happen.
Sometimes it doesn't of course, but you will be surprised at how many times it does.
There is always a big mouth out there,.... somewhere.
I know everyone is different, but that is my 2 cents, and how I do it.

Re: When times get tough
A little bit of both. Depends on the particular situation with size of property and if there's a lot of other folks around.
If I'm moving around an area and come to a particularly good looking spot then I might set up for a little while if there's some fresh sign or I know turkeys use that area regularly. I really dont like deer hunting them and get pretty bored after 30-45 min so Im usually on my feet more than my butt if I'm on a property big enough to move around on. I'm not really burning up a ton of ground but I feel like I'm limiting myself if I just sit in one spot all day waiting on one to walk by.

Re: When times get tough
Ditto. A lot of Public I hunt in Iowa isn't that big to be running and gunning. If you know the birds are there, it's a waiting game.Stinky J Picklestein wrote:It depends on how much land I have permission to hunt.
