I don't really know. I'm not to the level of some of you guys but I'm making the transition from a turkey hunter to turkey killer. By that I mean now when I locate a gobbler I feel more in control as opposed to when I first started I second guessed everything I did. One thing I think I have going for me is I'm willing to go to more lengths than most guys. I'll wade through swamps, ill go deep into the woods when most guys won't I stay until legal hunting hours are over. I won't win a calling contest but I practice incessantly and am very confident in my calling and the gobblers I've killed seemed to have approved. I'm comfortable in the woods. My one problem is I get turned around all the time. I say turned around because I've never had to spend the night in the woods. Long and short of it I may not be a machine but I'm absolutely eat up with turkey hunting.

That is why you should always carry a .22 cal. rifle along, for those stuborn ones that think they are safe out of splattergun range. I prefer the .223 myself.

All the way up until the two or three decoys in your vest deal. Dang it, I figured something would knock me out of the skilled group. :?

I am working on a MOJO turkey decoy that will circle the decoys on the ground.

I use to be the best going thru the woods without making noise, but now I have the coordination of an arthritic old fart.
I don't worry about what it takes to be a great Turkey hunter. I just go out and kill the damn things, with pure enjoyment.

My cousin and I hunted them for 6-7 years before we saw or heard a turkey. We didn't have any one to teach us the ropes. We could find feathers, dropping, tracks, dusting bowls, everything but a turkey. I think it took us 3-4 years before we ever got a mouth call to make a sound. I've always considered it a successful hunt and a blessing if I got to hear one gobble in the mornings. To me sitting in the turkey woods watching the woods come alive, and hearing that gobbler answer my call is a profoundly religious experience and proof of Gods existence.

Very good article. I agree with the decoy thing being excessive. All the other stuff was very good.

He left out to always sit where the turkey wants to go. Don't sit where he doesn't want to go. Always make the call the turkey wants to hear. Call just enough to fool the turkey. This is the Goldilocks technique. You'll know if you are doing it right if you shoot the bird. Know in advance where the bird will be standing when it's time to shoot. Walk slow sometimes, but walk fast other times. Don't let the turkey see or hear you move unless you sound like a hen walking in the leaves. If you scare the bird, you didn't read the last sentence. Don't fire warning shots at the turkey or say "stop, or I'll shoot". No time for chicanery or chivalry. When you shoot, make sure you hit the turkey. If you miss a turkey, chances are you are a lousy shot. But it's always good to blame the gun. If you are answering the call of nature while wearing overalls, make sure you know where the straps are before answering the call. Oh, pee before you start working a bird. As for supplies, never leave home without at least one roll of tp. Charmin Mega roll will just about get me through a season.

I thought I had it all covered pretty good til he said 3 decoys and a gps. But I guess I could use the gps to mark where I ditched the decoys.
All in all it's sound advice.

Nope, thats why I don't kill one every time I go out. I am skilled at making the same mistakes it seems. And yes great advice for us older hunters. The peeing thing! Or end up looking like this after a long set up. :bounce:
