Play B: Apply First-Strike Strategies

Periods of intense hunting pressure, henned-up longbeards and tight-beaked birds that just won’t gobble all are factors that can ruin a hunt. Fortunately, there are some first-strike strategies that can give you a competitive edge over other hunters and stubborn gobblers.

To get the jump on a call-shy longbeard, try constructing mock strut zones within your favorite hunting location. Using a handsaw and rake to clear out small open areas that offer good visibility can be a deadly strategy. Planting a hassle-free, shade-tolerant food plot mix that does not require tilling also will enhance these mock strut zones. Another high-impact tactic is to construct mock dust bowls with a small shovel or mattock near prime setup locations. Both these first-strike techniques can help dictate daily patterns and create excellent ambush sites.

It's probably a marketing ploy. Dude's bro-in-law is in the garage right now making little dust bowl shovels and strut rakes to hit Cabelas shelve's in the near future. Both available in the camo of your cohice for an extra ten bucks.

I'd love to have someone hunting with me for the first time start digging mock dust bowls and strut marks.

Ya Ma, I'm kind of embarrassed to have posted it because they are Chinese made. But then I read they were made by Shaolin Monks.

Those monks take pride in their work, the detail on the antennas of the grasshoppers is exceptional. The DSD of invertebrates.

There is some usefullness in that article. I've hunted one small tract of land a family member owns. Basically a 4 acre spot on a somewhat privet hedge choked riverbottom. It's a great place to hit after work with the kids and closeby. Sort of a last minute low odds but very convenient kind of spot. There's usually a good bit of turkeys in the area but I used to only see them pass through during deer season when the foliage was more open. I decided I could create a travel corridoor by cutting underbrush out of a 50 yard wide lane about 8 years ago. It worked, killed 5 long beards there in 5 years and a couple more since. If you have a small thick area to hunt then manipulating the understory to your advantage is something you can easily do.
